Position: Director of college counseling
Company: Collegewise - The Admissions Services Division of The Princeton Review
Location: Plano, Texas
Wanted: wildly ambitious, effortlessly likeable college counselors to change high
school students’ lives in Plano, Texas
*Are you a current or former college admissions officer who’s had enough of
reading applications and attending college fairs?
*Are you ready for a new challenge where your years as a gatekeeper will still be
put to good use?
*Would you like to work closely with students to inject guidance, sanity and even a
little fun into the college admissions process?
If you‘re nodding your head, you might enjoy being a director of college counseling at
Collegewise. (Or you might just be someone who compulsively responds in the
affirmative to any question.).
Collegewise is a small but rapidly growing college counseling company that recently
became a division of The Princeton Review. We’re looking for people with experience
working in admissions at selective colleges or universities (here comes the “rapidly
growing” part) to open our new office in Plano, Texas.
We do college counseling a little differently here. Our goal isn’t to get every kid who
works with us into an Ivy League school. Instead, we want to show families just how
many wonderful colleges are out there, lower their stress, and inject some much needed
perspective into the college admissions process. We also volunteer with several
organizations committed to improving access to higher education for under-resourced
students. Since 1999, we’ve helped over 5000 students attend 700 different colleges.
Collegewise directors of college counseling wear two professional hats. As a college
counselor, you will work with a caseload of 30-60 students—most of whom are juniors
and seniors—to help them find, and apply to, the right colleges for them. As a director,
you’ll also be in charge of running and growing a new Collegewise office. That means
lots of opportunities for public speaking, building relationships with high school
counselors, and thinking of creative ways to do an even better job for your families.
You won’t be crossing over to the private counseling dark side here, either. We have an
excellent reputation with both high school counselors and admissions officers. We
present at NACAC and the various affiliate conferences—some of you might have seen
our presentation on college essays at TACAC in 2011. We recycle and have at least one
confirmed vegetarian here (the rest of us are looking forward to some good Texas
barbecue). You might be hopping off the fast track to a slot as a dean of admissions at a
prestigious school, but you’ll be coming to a place where you can help kids and parents,
have your voice heard, and work in an educational, entrepreneurial environment that has
absolutely no connection with US News rankings. We’re biased, but really, this is a
pretty great place to come to work every day.
If your interest is piqued, get to know us a little better at www.collegewise.com. Find out
more about what we do, who you’d be working with, and what we believe. If you like
what you read and think you could find a professional home here, please send a resume
and cover letter to jobs@collegewise.com. Like a great college essay, an effective cover
letter should help us get to know who you really are. Don’t be afraid to be yourself—
smart, thoughtful, or maybe even funny. Just don’t be generic. This position starts at $4060K depending on experience, with room for future growth in both salary and
responsibility. We’d like new hires to start in May-June 2013, but we can adjust the start
date to accommodate the right person. If you have questions about the job, please email
us at the above address rather than call us. We promise to respond to you quickly.
Thanks for reading our ad. We’d love to hear from you, but if we don’t, we hope you find
the perfect professional fit someplace else.
