Wilbarger General Hospital Vernon, Texas Job Description Job Title: Director of Pharmacy Department: Pharmacy Job Summary: Plans, organizes, and directs the provision of pharmacy services for in-patients and outpatients of the hospital. Establishes policies, procedures, and departmental objectives. Supervises departmental personnel and all functions, including establishing pharmaceutical requirements, stock levels, and the receipt, control and issue or sale of controlled substances and other pharmaceuticals. Job Qualifications: A. Education: Graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the American College on Pharmaceutical Education with a BS in Pharmacy. B. Personal Job-Related Skills: Advanced knowledge of pharmaceutical theories and practices. Leadership and management abilities and effective oral and written communication skills C. Licensure, Registry or Certification: Pharmacist currently licensed with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. Certified to prepare IV admixtures by completion of training in IV admixtures and aseptic technique by a course recognized by ACPE. D. Experience: E. Rev 05/07/2012 1. Prior work experience: Three to five years experience in a hospital pharmacy and supervisory experience preferred. 2. Technical Training: IV preparation and aseptic technique. Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting and standing. Occasional bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 30 pounds. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: A. Provides the appropriate level of pharmaceutical care services to patients of the facility. B. Ensures that drugs and/or devices are prepared for distribution safely and accurately as prescribed. C. Ensures that pharmacy and staff complies with applicable State and Federal law and regulation. D. Coordinates and integrates the pharmacy’s services within the pharmacy and other departments. E. Develops policies and procedures that promote safe and effective use of medication within the hospital. F. Maintains an adequate drug supply and assures that all pharmaceuticals are in date and meet official USP of NF standards. G. Supervises drug storage and preparation areas throughout the hospital. H. Maintains strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock. I. Responsible for conduction of monthly inspections of all areas where drugs are dispensed or stored. J. Maintains appropriate quality control programs. K. Determines the qualifications and competence of department personnel who provide patient care services. L. Participates in the in-service education of the department’s personnel and hospital personnel where indicated. M. Serves as Secretary of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, prepares the agenda, and maintains records for the committee. N. Assists the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee in assessment activities relative to drug utilization review. O. Prepares annual budget and other financial reports for hospital administration in accordance with hospital policy. Assures that patient charges are submitted to data processing on time and assures that patient charges are in accordance with Medicare and/or insurance policies. Rev 05/07/2012 P. Provides drug information to the hospital’s professional staff and patients as necessary. Q. Performs performance improvement activities as required by hospital policy. Other Significant Requirements: A. Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis. B. Interacts with department managers, staff, Medical Staff members, vendors, visitors, etc. in a professional and courteous manner. C. Follows aseptic technique and established procedures for performing admixtures and using precautions when involved in handling potentially infectious materials. D. Adheres to established hospital and department guidelines and protocols. Supports hospital mission, vision, and values. E. Responds to emergency situations as needed. F. Reports to work on time, maintains professionalism at all times, and performs duties with minimal supervision.
