JOB DESCRIPTION:
A Bilingual ESL Teacher Assistant (TA) serves as a knowledgeable para-professional in the school-based Title III program. The primary
responsibility of a Bilingual ESL TA is to assist ESL teachers with the implementation of the language instruction educational program
within the school. This includes serving English Language Learners (ELLs) throughout the school in a variety of contexts using a wide
variety of services and techniques with the planning, direction and support of the ESL teacher. Bilingual ESL TAs also provide schoollevel translation and interpreting services to help facilitate home-school communication with families whose first language is not
English (in our county, these families are 95% Spanish speaking). As members of the Title III team, Bilingual ESL TAs help assure ELLs
students have a rigorous, relevant, free and appropriate educational opportunity regardless of race, language, disability or national
origin.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general direction of the school’s ESL Teacher, in conjunction with the school Principal, a Bilingual ESL TA performs the
following services which include but are not limited to the following examples of duties and functions:
1.
Provides classroom instructional assistance in the English as a second language classroom.
2.
Provides instructional services such as tutoring and student mentoring/advising to ELLs under the direction of the ESL teacher
who works in conjunction with the content area teacher.
3.
Works with small groups or individual ELLs in content area subjects with guidance and planning from content teachers to
support language development and content knowledge.
4.
Maintains appropriate data and logs on services rendered to ELLs that do not attend ESL classes, for whom they provide
instructional services and support.
5.
Interprets verbal communications between school personnel and Spanish speaking parents.
6.
Translates written communications between school personnel and Spanish speaking parents.
7.
Maintains appropriate data and logs on interpreting and translating services rendered.
8.
Maintains knowledge of current laws, regulations and best practices pertaining to interpreting/translating and instruction of
ELLs through attendance at meetings and workshops.
9.
Uses appropriate technology tools to help ESL teachers carry out Title III program compliance measures (e.g. ELLevations
Database, Microsoft Excel).
10. Assists ESL teachers with paperwork and records keeping for Title III compliance.
11. Serves as test administrator or proctor for annual English language proficiency testing.
12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
