Project Supervisor: Prof Robert Kerr, Mathematics/Engineering Title: "One-dimensional stochastic initiation of rainfall" The project would be to take an existing one-dimensional shallow water equation model with bottom topography, add temperature and moisture, and then apply stochastic forcing to replicate how rainfall can be initiated by the interaction of discrete variations in the topography. This could be applicable to desert floors such as in Arizona and irregular coastlines, in the case of the British Isles. The goal would be to guide the development of new parameterisations using stochastic differential equations that could be used in mesoscale weather prediction codes. Bob Kerr
