St. Christina School Newsletter September 5, 2013 Today the raffle ticket booklets for the TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) that each family can opt to participate in are being sent home with the youngest or only student in each family. The program is voluntary on your part but is designed to help you have an option to raise money to help defray part of your tuition cost. If you decide you do not want to participate, simply return the raffle tickets and the cost will be added to your Smart Tuition account in December. The raffle ticket booklets are stapled together in groups of 10. The cost of each ticket is $20 so the total amount that should be collected for each booklet is $200. Depending on what your family obligation is, you may receive more tickets than you need. We could not get tickets booklets for specific TAP amounts. If you do not need to sell all the tickets in the booklets to meet your quota, please return them when you turn in the money for the rest of the tickets. You will be charged for any tickets not returned. If you are able to sell extra tickets – thanks! The ticket sales will run through the middle of November with the first drawing on December 1 st. All money collected, ticket stubs and unsold tickets should be returned in an envelope labeled TAP. This is the only opportunity being offered this year for the TAP program. It seems there are more and more children with food allergies than ever before. In our ongoing effort to keep all our students safe we are amending our Wellness Policy regarding food treats to include only store bought items that are individually wrapped and have the ingredients listed on them. However, I highly encourage you to send in non-food items for birthdays and parties as some children are so highly allergic the treats must be sent home with classmates as any contact may trigger an allergic reaction in some grades. Rest assured, birthdays and parties will still be celebrated in the classrooms and enjoyed no matter if there is food there or not. We look forward to meeting with you next Wednesday evening at our Acquaintance Night. This is a great opportunity to not only meet the person who will be your partner in your child’s education this year, but to demonstrate that your child’s success is important to you and foster their love of learning by being involved. You can visit the classrooms where they will spend so much time over the next nine months and will hear about class expectations, grading policies, schedules and curriculum. Our evening will begin at 7:00 p.m. in church with faculty, SAC and FSA introductions and then a brief overview of school goals for the year. From there you will be directed to classrooms and meeting places where teachers will speak about grade specific topics. There will be multiple sessions offered to enable you to meet with different teachers. This year we are using a new data and grading system called PowerSchool. Parents of students in grades two through eight can access their child’s grades directly through this program. We will no longer be using EDline. Information and instructions for access can be found in your child’s white envelope today. We have some very generous girls at St. Christina. At the Parish Picnic, Brook Berg, Natalie Wagner, Heather Wagner, Emily McDermott and Keira Cotter sold bracelets they had made and then presented a bracelet and the money to me to donate to a worthy cause. How generous of these girls! And that wasn’t the only generous group – Gabi Novickus, Hanna Turner and Caitlin Lamb presented me with their own money as a donation for our school that I plan to put toward more Smartboards. Thanks girls – you are really demonstrating kindness and service to others through your actions! Have a good week! Read all messages and report cards that come home from school. Limit the amount of time your child watches television, uses the internet and plays video games each day. Have books and other reading materials available in your home. Read to your child every day and listen to your child read to you. Maintain communication with your child’s teacher throughout the school year. Get a library card for you and your child and encourage your child to use the library regularly. Help your child with school projects or other interactive homework and have fun! Make learning fun and do activities or play games at home that enhance your child’s academic skills, such as playing board games to enhance math, reading and problem solving skills. 9. Make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep each night. Being tired can make it very hard to concentrate and learn. 10. Encourage your child to do the best they can in school!
