Evening Courses

Hebrew Level 1+

Prerequisite for entry

Basic knowledge of spoken and written Hebrew; (successful completion of Hebrew syllabus 1 at

UCL Language Centre or other comparable studies)

Term duration

10 x 2-hour classes.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to enable students to extend their ability in spoken and written Hebrew beyond basic survival level, with an emphasis on practical everyday vocabulary and grammar.

The course includes practice in all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) as well as attention to issues specific to Israeli and Jewish culture.

Describing one’s daily routine

Describing interests, hobbies and jobs

Describing food, cooking and dining

Asking for and giving reasons (‘why’ and ‘because’)

Introduction to Israeli geography (cities, towns, the countryside and kibbutzim)

Introduction to Israeli cinema

Grammar

Introduction to the ‘binyanim’ (Hebrew verb conjugations)

Pa’al, pi’el, hif’il and hitpa’el verbs in the present tense

Infinitives of pa’al, pi’el, hif’il and hitpa’el verbs

The definite object article

Nominal sentences

The use of the word ‘kol’ (all/every)
