Mrs. Carter’s Science Class - Parent Information Letter 2013-2014
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Hello! My name is Heather Carter and I will be your student’s Science teacher this year. I am
really looking forward to working with you, and I am excited to help your student succeed in my
class! This is currently my second year at Hayden High School and excited to be a Wildcat! I
am fulfilling my life’s calling as a teacher. I truly care about my students and want to see them
learn. I have high expectations for your child and have every intention to see your child learn
and succeed. I will give my every effort to every child every day!
I also would like the door of communication to be open; therefore, if you ever need to
contact me feel free to do so by email or school phone. Please remember, if you ever have a
question or concern to contact me first. We will work out the situation best as possible!
Most questions arise from misunderstanding or miscommunication. I will give my best
effort to make clear anything that may arise during the school year.
**I have given your son or daughter two important documents with this letter for Science Class:
1. Syllabus, includes a set of guidelines that explains how the students can have the most positive
learning experience in my classroom.
2. Science Safety laboratory policy- Please take a moment and review both items given to your
student. I am required to keep this paper on file for your child to conduct any lab in class. If I do
not have this for your child they cannot participate. If you have any questions, comments or
concerns, feel free to contact me.
There is 1 page that needs to be filled out by you and your child, signed and returned a.s.a.p.!

LAB DONATION
Since this is a Science Course I plan on doing several labs this year! Labs will cost money
for supplies, and with saying that I am asking for a Lab Donation of $10.00.
This will help buy materials and supplies for student use. If there is any left over money, it will
be used towards classroom supply usage.
You can send a check – payable to “Hayden High School” – and in the memo line only write
“Carter Science Lab Donation”.

application skills; cell processes; cell theory; photosynthesis and cellular respiration; genetics; classification; plants;
animals; ecology; and biogeochemical cycles. This fulfills the biology graduation requirement. *Lab Donation $10
Anatomy & Physiology Course Description: This course is organized to follow a logical sequence of the ten
systems of the human body with emphasis on diseases and disorders. Course content includes: scientific process and
application skills; anatomical terminology; structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and body systems;
biochemistry; and system regulation and integration. Prerequisite: Biology *Lab Donation $10.00
Zoology Course: This course focuses on advanced biological concepts in the animal kingdom. Emphasis is placed
on classification, identification, and form and function. Students also study endangered species and protecting them.
Studies in the field are required so students may observe animals in their natural surroundings. Prerequisite: Biology
*This course does not have an adopted textbook & may require students buying outside resources/books.

Classroom Rules:
We are CATS! ....Settling for Nothing Less!
Students are expected to follow all county and school rules. Specific classroom rules (see below) are posted at the
front of the class. Special rules will be issued for labs. In addition to my rules, all Hayden High School rules apply.
1. Students will treat themselves, all teachers/staff, school property, & their classmates
with kindness & respect!
2. Students will bring all materials to class everyday (textbook, notebook, paper, pencil).
3. Students are expected to arrive on time to class, take their seats & start their bell ringer
before the tardy bell rings.

objects to themselves.
5. Students are not allowed to eat/drink/chew gum in class!
Negative Consequences:
1. Verbal Warning – Reminder of our Rules

4. Student sent to pre-arranged location with another teacher.
5. Parent Contact and Detention (and possible behavior contract)
6. Refer to Principal *Severe Clause – Any fighting or severe disruption is an immediate office referral.
Paper headings: All papers should have the first and last name, date, class period, and description of the
assignment (i.e. hw p. 10 #’s 1-8) written in the upper right or left hand corner of the paper.
Notebooks: All students are required to keep an interactive science notebook that is neatly organized.
Notebooks will be graded. There will be “pop-notebook quizzes” and scheduled Notebook Tests
related to the content learned and studied that has been kept in our notebooks. The Notebook Table
of Contents will be listed in the classroom of what should be kept and in what order to help students keep
track of the content.
Homework: Homework will be given when it adds to student learning. It is important and is not meant
to be tedious or meaningless. Homework will be graded. Students are to check the board daily for
assignments. Please remember that studying is a form of homework and it can and will be
assessed. Assignments are expected to be turned in on the due date.
Tutoring/ extra help: Students who want or need extra help may see me before school. If this time is not
suitable please make time to see me so that we may discuss a suitable time. Do not wait until the day of or
the day before a test or an assignment is due to seek help. As an educator, I care about students’ success!
Please do not hesitate to ask if there are any questions about assignments or material when it is assigned.
Make-up work policy: It is advised that students make up any missed assignments as soon as he or she
returns to school. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for any missed assignments. We follow the
Hayden High School Policy for make-up work. An UE absence results in a 0 for any missed work.
Students have 3 days to make up missed work IF they have an Excused absence. Assignments and
class activities are also updated on my webpage on our school website daily!
Attendance Policy: Students are expected to be in class on time every day. (See board and school
policy!) Students miss valuable information and excess absences can cause grades to drop.
Tardy policy: When the tardy bell rings, students must be in the class and seated in his or her assigned
seat in order not to be counted tardy. A tardy student must report to the tardy desk at the end of the hall.
The student will be allowed in class only with a pass.
Hall passes: Each student is given a chance to use the restroom BEFORE the tardy bell rings for class.
Students may ask if we are doing independent class work at the end of class. Students may be granted
permission if they do not abuse restroom privileges (i.e. Do not plan to ask every day!). No student is
allowed out of the room during testing unless it’s an emergency. If there is a medical condition (with a
physician/nurse note) or emergency there can and will be made exceptions/accommodations.
Parental contact: Progress reports will be sent home on a regular basis. An interim will be sent home by
the student during the 4th week of every nine weeks. Parents are welcome to schedule a conference at any
time when concerned about their child’s progress.
Student conference: Students are welcome and encouraged to schedule an appointment to discuss
grades, performance, and/or problems in class. During class time or lecture is not the time to discuss
your progress or grades. Students are not to interrupt the class to ask about their grade. Students
who want to know their grade or progress must ask the teacher during a scheduled time. (Before or after
class, or before/after school is an okay time as long as it’s not interrupting the class!)
LATE WORK: Points may and will be deducted for any work that is not turned in on the date it is due.
An assignment that is 1 day late is 10-20 points off depending on the total points possible. It is 5 points
off for each day thereafter it is late. Assignments will not be taken after 3 days late unless arrangements
have been made.
