1.4.j2 Deans Meetings with External and Internal (Students) Stakeholders
July 2013 to February 2015
The Dean of the College of Education and Human Development has had close to 100
meetings with both external and internal stakeholders in the last 20 months. He was
accompanied by faculty and staff on many of these meetings outlined in the Table below. The
primary goal of these meetings—that continue—is to ascertain how the COEHD can collaborate
with school districts, schools, potential partners, and other educational providers to improve
the educational landscape in the greater New Orleans metropolitan area. In short, the College
wants to remain responsive and relevant in the dynamically changing K-12 educational
landscape.
Our meetings have yielded significant collaboration that enable school districts to meet
their challenges drawing upon the expertise of our faculty and staff. For example, Jefferson
Parish Public School System has nearly 12% English Language Learners (ELL) in a district of
nearly 50,000 students in 81 schools and nearly 3,000 teachers. This is the largest district in the
state. We have developed a four course ELL certificate for in-service teachers so that their ELL
students are appropriately accommodated. This collaboration continues and we hope to
develop a cohort model over several years. Similarly in the case of Saint Bernard and Saint
Charles School Systems, we provided in-service teachers with literacy professional development
over a number of years. Through continued conversations opportunities for collaboration
continue.
It is clear in speaking with school superintendents and their lieutenants that COEHD
graduates are well prepared to teach and be effective leaders in their districts. When pressed
in asking them how we can better prepare leaders and especially K-12 teachers and where
district demands are in the next 5-10 years the following observations arise. First, our teacher
education candidates could be better prepared to use instructional technology. This
observation is consistent with COEHD students who continue to share that in meetings with the
College leadership and sometimes in written teaching evaluations. So, as we work on course
content and assess what courses might need to de added, modified, or deleted one with an
instructional technology focus is a high priority. Secondly, K-12 schools need qualified special
educators to meet the growing needs of children across the region. Our integrated-to-merged
program is meeting those needs and we need to be creative in leveraging resources to increase
the number of candidates that we prepare in the years ahead.
