Technology-Based Supervision: Extending the Reach of Clinical Supervisors
Trainer’s Preparation Checklist
Curriculum Materials (provided on the USB key distributed at the Training of Trainers):
 Slide Presentation
 References Document
 Reference Articles
 Where to Find More Information Document
 Case Scenarios and Activities (Handouts)
Materials Preparation:
 Customize slide #1 to include your name, agency, and the date of your training.
 Customize slide #3 to update the agenda times.
 Confirm that links and videos within the presentation are working.
 Load the slide presentation onto your laptop or USB drive. Print a copy of the presentation for
your trainer’s manual.
 Create a participant’s packet:
o Copy slides as handouts, and include the handouts for case scenarios and activities, and
an evaluation form (if using) for each participant.
o Copy the References and Where to Find More Information documents for each
participant.
o Review Where to Find More Information and add updated links and resources that are
relevant to your participants.
 Create an agenda with meeting date, times, and location.
o Copy the agenda for each participant.
o Remember to add in time for breaks and lunch.
 If you are providing participants with electronic copies of the curriculum materials, save items to
USB keys.
o You may want to include some or all of the reference articles for participants to read on
their own. The articles in the folder labelled “Technology-Based Supervision References
– Shortlist) are the most frequently-cited articles.
o You may also want to search for and incorporate new literature, as the research on the
use of technology for clinical supervision is expanding rapidly.
 Prepare information about rules related to technology-based clinical supervision that is specific
to the licensing boards that oversee your state (or states, if participants are from a broader
geographic region).

Logistics:
 Secure a training room large enough to accommodate participants sitting in a U-shape, with
space in the center for “fish bowl-style” activities.
o Ensure training room has a projector and screen, or plan to bring your own.
 To accommodate the video-conferencing practice, there should be space outside the training
room for participants to join in a videoconference. A hallway or small meeting room or
classroom is sufficient.
 Set-up access to a video-conferencing platform (such as Zoom, Skype, etc.; if demonstrating
using chat during live supervision, make sure the platform supports that function).



Ensure the availability of WIFI in the training room.
A hard-line internet connection may be useful as well, as a back-up if WIFI is not functional.

 Laptop for presentation, copy of slide presentation, and projector, including all power cords and
slide remote.
 Trainer’s manual with slides, notes, and handouts.
 Participant’s packets (including USB key, if providing, and handouts).
 Flip chart or large paper and markers for taking notes during introductions and activities.
 Depending on the activities used to demonstrate technology, prepare the following:
o Bring 2-4 additional laptops, or ask participants to bring laptops, for demonstrating
group supervision. Smartphones and tablets may also be used; check for compatibility
with the video-conferencing platform.
o All laptops should have built-in cameras; if not, bring add-on webcams.
o Headsets may be useful for demonstrating video-conferencing.
 Create nametags for all participants, or provide folded tent cards and markers for them to write
their own.
