Man Charges Pastor with Brick; Pastor Responds With Glock
A Detroit man entered a storefront church about fifteen minutes after the service started
and threatened the pastor with a brick. According to the pastor, he and this brick-wielder
had a history.
When the man came in, threatening the pastor with a brick in his hand, the pastor
responded with a Glock and four or five shots. The man died at the hospital.
As it turns out, the pastor may have not been so innocent. The man who threatened him
with a brick wasn’t just any man. This man Deante Smith believed that his wife had had
an affair with the pastor, an affair which resulted in a baby. Detroit News reported:
Smith had ranted on Facebook that his pastor had gotten his wife pregnant, weeks
before police say he showed up with the brick Sunday during church service and
attacked the minister.
Two Detroit police sources said detectives were investigating a possible love
triangle between Smith, his wife and their pastor.
[Assistant Police Chief Steve] Dolunt said police were called to the church in
September. On Sept. 16, Smith wrote that he planned to attend the church.
“Can't wait to see Sunday message at the City of God Ministry,” he wrote. “I’ll
be there with the truth.”
Later that day, Smith wrote: “This (expletive) gonna hit the fan.”
In a Sept. 15 post, Smith wrote: “That wasn’t my baby that was (his wife) and
pastor(’s) baby.” That preceded a Sept. 18 rant: “This (expletive) got my
(expletive) pregnant. Tick tock (expletive) and everybody with you.”
Smith posted several times in the weeks leading up to his death about the pain he
was feeling about the alleged affair. On Oct. 8, he wrote: “I’m hurting, yall.”
His posts appeared to concern friends, one of whom wrote on Oct. 13, “may I ask
(what) is going on with you?”
Smith replied: “I'm crazy they call me S.O.N.I.C.”
Of course, it could have been all in his head. The pastor has so far been very cooperative
with the police. Maybe they’ll conduct a DNA test to see if the baby is his.
Even if it turns out that the pastor did have an adulterous affair with Smith’s wife,
perhaps threatening the pastor with a brick in the middle of a church service wasn’t the
wisest way to deal with it.
