Press Release +++ Mobile App delivers water level measurement and more +++ Mobile App delivers water level measurement and more Smart Water Level Monitoring: Simple and accurate with the Mobile Water Tracker from KISTERS Aachen, November 2014 – For the detection of hydrotechnical data, the Mobile Water Tracker from KISTERS offers a complete, smart solution. The user only needs to start the smartphone app and photograph the water level at the staff gauge. Everything else is automatic, from the collection of data through to the transmission and data evaluation. For hand-operated weirs the app directs specific action plans from the data transmitted. Accessing measurement, analysis and control using your smartphone and artificial intelligence greatly accelerates and simplifies the entire process and eliminates possible errors that can have a negative impact on data quality or decisions. The Mobile Water Tracker is simple and intuitive. The user starts the app and photographs the water gauge; variables such as the angle at which the photo was taken are automatically adjusted for by calculations carried out by the app. The result is automatically determined from the photo of the water level. The system impresses with its accuracy, because the measurements are accurate to within 5 mm, with a tolerance of only 2 mm. TEMA Seite 1 The Mobile Water Tracker automatically sends the photos to an evaluation server that determines the measurement using image processing and pattern recognition methods from the information in the photo, and then forwards the collected data to an FTP server. From here, the data can be imported into any application, e.g. into the WISKI Water Information System. Benefits to the user The Mobile Water Tracker automates the capture of water levels from classic staff gauges. The app works even with dirty measuring gauges, which greatly facilitates the determination of the water level. Here, the main advantage is the optimization of the data collected by avoiding manual processes. The increased efficiency in the collection and processing of visual information reduces the cost per data value. The Mobile Water Tracker can also be used for manually controlled weirs. From the data collected on site with the app, the server determines the optimum settings of the weir and provides appropriate instructions to the engineer on site. Also new, is the analysis of water quality data through automatic evaluation of the photographed level gauge. This also shows that the error rate decreases dramatically as individually-related differences are excluded in colour perception. Mapping via GPS and QR Code The Mobile Water tracker transmits not only image information but also the GPS coordinates of the gauge and, from this, determines the exact location. Alternatively or complementary to this, a QR code is provided on the staff gauge, this is especially useful when there are TEMA Seite 2 several gauges at a measurement location in close proximity to one another. Other applications are for gauges located under structures here the reception of a GPS signal is often not possible. The coordinates and other metadata of level gauges have already been pre-deposited in the evaluation server. Crowd sourcing made easy Due to the ease of use, the software is suitable not only for professionals, but also for interested citizens. This offers tremendous advantages, especially in a large surveillance area. In flood situations, citizens with the Mobile Water Tracker can determine any data gaps in detected water levels, for example, following the failure of automatic measuring stations.
