February 2, 2015, 7 pm EST- Online Reading Comprehension: Opportunities and Challenges How does reading and learning change on the Internet? You are invited into a conversation about the nature of information on the Internet and its implications for how we think about reading comprehension and critical thinking in a digital information age. During this session, you will gain new insights about the challenges associated with locating, evaluating, and synthesizing online texts while also considering the potential opportunities for authentic inquiry and collaborative conversations as part of online learning. March 30, 2015, 7 pm EST - Strategies for Supporting Productive Online Inquiry How are online reading comprehension practices integrated into classroom instructional routines? Julie will introduce you to practical ways of using Guided Inquiry and Internet Reciprocal Teaching strategies to support elementary and secondary students as developing online readers. Walk away with several research-based ideas for how to move readers through three phases of online inquiry while fostering higher-level thinking, critical evaluation, productive dialogue, and skillful argumentation practices across all grade levels. Primary audience is literacy specialists and coaches, but open and appropriate for classroom teachers, administrators, college faculty, and researchers. Note: Additional information on how to register will be posted in January Julie Coiro is Associate Professor in the School of Education and Co-Director of the Joint PhD in Education program at the University of Rhode Island. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the International Reading Association. Julie conducts research and speaks nationally and internationally about the new literacies of the Internet, online reading comprehension strategy instruction, and effective practices for technology integration and professional development. A former elementary and middle school teacher, Julie provides professional development for teachers worldwide. Julie’s publications are in journals and monographs, such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Educational Leadership, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Theoretical Processes and Models of Reading (6th edition) and The International Handbook of Literacy and Technology (2 nd edition). She is co-editor of the Handbook of Research on New Literacies (Erlbaum, 2008) and co-author of the 4th edition of the book Teaching with the Internet K-12: New Literacies for New Times (2004).
