Boardman Varsity Swimming and Diving
2015 - 2016
“A tradition of excellence in the pool and the classroom”
Welcome to the 31st year of Boardman Varsity swimming!
We are pleased that you are
interested in being part of our winning tradition and our swimming family. This informational packet will give
you a brief history of our program and answer some of the questions you might have about being a varsity
swimmer or diver on our 2014-2015 Boardman High School Swim Team.
Three Spartan swimmers have been recognized at state and national level. Tyler O’Halloran (03) won three
state titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and continued his swimming career at the University of Texas. At
U. T. Tyler earned 11 NCAA Division I All-American Honors, qualified to swim several events at the 2004 and
2008 Olympic Swim Trails, and placed 5th in the 50 yard breaststroke for “Team U. S. A.” at the 2007 World
University Games in Thailand. Ryan Bailey won the state title in the 100 butterfly in 2013. Ryan is a threetime All-American swimmer in breaststroke and butterfly. He accepted an appointment from the United States
Naval Academy. He will be entering his junior year at the academy and swims for the Mid-Shipmen. Jackie
Bak Yost (89) was the first swimmer to enter the Boardman High School Hall of Fame in 2003. Jackie also was
honored to be inducted in the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame. Jackie held most of the school records for
many years. She went on to swim at the University of Pennsylvania where she set two school records. Jackie
was the USA Swim Team Manager for “Team U. S. A.” at the 2004 Olympics and 2005 World Championships.
Jackie, Tyler, and Ryan along with hundreds of graduates have stated that the experiences gained from being on
our team have had very positive effects on their lives. They also send a message to the 2015-16 teams. Go
Spartans! Swim Faster!!
The high school swim team is coached by Terry O’Halloran, Carlo Cordon, Chad DeAngelo, and Ron Navarra
(diving). The coaches combined bring over 75 years of coaching experience to the pool deck. Mr. O’Halloran
retired from teaching Fourth Grade at Stadium Drive Elementary School for 38 years and was the coach at
Boardman Tennis and Swim Club for 40 years. Coach O’Halloran is currently working as a Title I teacher at
West Blvd. Elementary School. Mr. Cordon teaches Social Studies at Glenwood Middle School and is the head
coach at the Applewood Swim Club. Both coaches have earned level four certifications by the American
Swimming Coaches Association. Only 10 percent of all swimming coaches in the world have reached this
certification level. Mr. DeAngelo teaches science at Boardman High School and is a former team captain and
state swimmer for the Spartan swim team. He is the head coach at the Boardman Tennis and Swim Club in the
summer and has a Level II certification through the American Swim Coaches Association. Diving Coach Ron
Navarra is certified coach through the OHSAA and AAU Diving. He graduated from YSU in 1994 with a
degree in Human Performance and Exercise Science / Sports Management. Under their direction Boardman
High School swimmers have earned 15 All-American time standards, 61 Academic All-Americans, 80 Ohio
State Qualifiers, and maintained an eighty percent win to loss record in dual meets. The Spartan swim teams
also excel in the classroom. The girls earned a national bronze medal for the 2014-15 season by achieving a
3.40 team GPA.
The boys earned a bronze medal for their 3.40 team GPA. Both teams are ranked
academically in the top ten percent of all high school swim teams in the country.
Our 2015-2016 Spartan Swim Team will return one state qualifier, Cori Kuras. Kuras swam butterfly on the
state medley relay. Kuras also is the second fastest swimmer in school history in the 50 yard freestyle. The
boy’s team returns district qualifiers; Seniors Aaron Dunlany and Ethan Schwendeman will lead the boy’s team.
Two boys from the sophomore class are expected to be impact swimmers. They are Kyle Kimerer and Callen
Aulizia. Sophomores Maddie Rast and Dominic Mariano will be springing off the 1- meter diving boards.
Spartan swimmers and divers work hard in and out of the pool! They are recognized for their community
service projects over the holidays. Go Spartan swimmers and divers!
Boardman Varsity Swim Team Information
How do I join the team?
First of all you need to be able to swim at least 50 yards unassisted to be considered for the team. Swimmers
can be cut from the team for a lack of swimming ability or a lack of effort.
You should fill out the general information sheet at the end of this packet. You will be put on our team
communication list. We will notify you about upcoming team activities and meetings. If you decide to join you
will need to get a physical by your doctor and fill out the school paperwork including the emergency medical
form. You will be tested for drug use before the season and randomly tested during the season. All required
forms will need to be submitted by October 15, 2015 to the athletic office or any of the coaches. Please note
that The Boardman Board of Education requires a $50 participation fee for all varsity sports that must be paid
by the start of the swim season which is November 6th, 2015. Other fees for team equipment and booster club
dues will be presented at the team / parent meeting picnic on September 20th. This meeting is required for all
swimmers and parent(s). The picnic will be held at Beard Pavillon, 4:30-6:00pm. The average total for a first
year swimmer last season was $300 which included the school participation fee, booster dues, and team
equipment.
When does the team practice?
The team practices and holds all home meets at YSU’s Beeghly Natatorium. Monday through Friday we leave
the high school at 3:20, travel by bus to YSU, practice from 4:30-6:30, and return to the high school at 7:15 PM.
On Saturdays we meet in the weight room at 8 AM, workout until 9:10, travel to YSU, practice from 10-12
noon, and return to the high school at 12:40. We also require swimmers to be in the Fitness Center from 6:107:20 AM on Mondays / Wednesdays and 8-9:15 AM on Saturdays. A complete detailed practice schedule will
be passed out to all swimmers at our fall picnic. All practices including moning fitness center sessions are
mandatory. You may be excused from practices for illness, injury, a school related activity, and emergency
weather conditions. Individuals missing unexcused practices will not swim in the meets, could lose their varsity
letter, and maybe asked to resign from the team. Swimmers may report off by calling or texting the coaches’
cell phones by giving their name and reason for missing a practice. You also need to bring a written note from
a parent and give it to Coach DeAngelo explaining your absence the very next practice date. Failure to bring in
your note will result in an unexcused practice.
Are there academic requirements to be on the team?
All student athletes must have passing grades in five academic subjects before the season and during the season
to be eligible to participate in swimming at Boardman. Every nine weeks grades are posted and students not
passing 5 subjects will not be able to swim or participate in any other varsity sport for the next 9-week period.
Boardman also takes pride in academic success by having a weekly grade evaluation by your teachers. Any
students not meeting the above passing standard will sit out each week until the coach is notified by the school
that the athlete is now academically eligible. He or she may practice at the coach’s discretion but cannot swim
in any meets.
How do I earn a varsity letter?
All swimmers have a chance to earn a varsity letter their first year on the team. Please refer to the time chart in
this packet that will show any of the times needed for each stroke to qualify. At any time during the season in a
meet competition a swimmer may tie or break one of the published time standards. If he or she does then they
could earn a varsity letter if they are in good standing with team rules and the coaches. All second year
swimmers will earn a varsity letter if they too are in good standing with their coaches and follow the team rules.
How do I get to practice and the meets?
We take a bus everywhere we go as a team. If you drive to YSU then Coach DeAngelo must be notified ahead
of time on his cell phone by a parent and given verbal permission to alter your swimmer’s travel schedule. At
all away meets the swimmers are required to ride the bus to and from meets. When we swim meets at YSU,
the parents will transport their athletes back home after the meet. The school will not provide transportation
back to BHS on all meets at YSU. Swim team members can ride with other swimmers and or parents of other
swimmers only if a coach is notified ahead of time.
How can I contact a coach if I have any questions?
