February 2013
Australian Curriculum: Science and History
Term 1 update
All NT schools are to commence implementation of the T-10 Australian Curriculum Science
and History learning areas by the beginning of Semester 2 2013 at the latest.
Dedicated science and history pages on Learning Links (URL
http://ed.ntschools.net/ll/Pages/default.aspxhttp://ed.ntschools.net/ll/Pages/default.aspx)
have been developed to present a comprehensive range of resources, advice, teaching
materials and professional learning courses to support implementation. We highly
recommend that time is taken to explore what is available on the site.
Northern Territory and Multiple Year Level Scope and Sequences
The Northern Territory and Multiple Year Level Scope and Sequences describe the
intended curriculum using content descriptions (the scope) for English and Mathematics
organised by year level, across school terms and by units of work (the sequence). These
documents are intended to assist in providing consistency in curriculum delivery throughout
the NT.
All schools are expected to use either, the NT Scope and Sequence OR the Multiple Year
Level Scope and Sequence to inform whole school, year level and classroom plans.
Support documents such as the Whole School Curriculum and Assessment Plan template
have been developed to reflect the Multiple Year Level teaching materials. These are
available in the Planning section on Learning Links.
Curriculum into the Classroom (C2C) and Multiple Year Level (English, Mathematics)
teaching materials are available on Learning Links. The English and Mathematics year level
and unit plan materials inform the sequence of curriculum delivery described in the NT or
Multiple Year Level Scope and Sequences. Exemplar Multiple Year Level Science and
History year level plans and unit plans will be available soon.
Early primary teachers’ toolkit
Following the 2012 NT pilot of the Early Years Learning
Framework (EYLF) and Australian Curriculum, a range of
materials have been developed and are now available on the
new Early Years page on Learning Links. These materials
include the Early Primary Teachers’ Toolkit as a starting point
for teachers to understand how to embed the content of
curriculum in conjunction with the pedagogy of the EYLF. How
to incorporate system requirements into teachers’ planning
and programming is also discussed. While there is a particular
focus on Transition teachers’ needs, the Early Primary
Teachers’ Toolkit is relevant for all Early Years’ teachers.
The toolkit includes professional readings, web-links, quick start fundamentals and
guidelines on how to plan, teach and assess in the early years.

-2Curriculum, assessment and reporting policy review
The draft Northern Territory Board of Studies Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Policy
and Guidelines T-9 will be published in mid-March for trial. All school leaders and teachers
are asked to review and use the draft policy and guidelines during Term 1 to provide
feedback on the usability to inform the final publication. The policy and guidelines can be
accessed from Learning Links and http://www.education.nt.gov.au/teacherseducators/curriculum-ntbos/ntbos.
Australian Curriculum learning area development
ACARA continues its work in the development of new learning areas with the NT playing an
active role in consultation processes. Current opportunities for consultation include:
 contribution to the validation of The Arts Achievement Standards
 feedback on draft Australian Curriculum materials for Health and Physical Education,
Technologies and Languages for Chinese and Italian. A number of NT schools are also
participating in the trial of these learning areas.
The Geography curriculum is in its final stages of approval prior to public release.
Information about NT implementation of this learning area will be released by the NT Board
of Studies in Semester One.
