University at Buffalo Institutional Review Board (UBIRB) Office of Research Compliance | Clinical and Translational Research Center Room 5018 875 Ellicott St. | Buffalo, NY 14203 UB Federalwide Assurance ID#: FWA00008824 Title of research study: Textbook Analysis and Teacher Concerns In Algebra I Common Core, protocol number: 701029-1 Version Date: 2/16/15 Investigator: Jeri Diletti Why am I being invited to take part in a research study? You are being invited to take part in a research study because I am seeking to understand how teachers use textbooks in planning their Algebra I Common Core classes and what factors influence their textbook use. Of equal importance in this study is which resources teacher’s use, the frequency of use, and how they feel the resources meet the goals of the CCSS Initiative. What should I know about a research study? Someone will explain this research study to you. Whether or not you take part is up to you. You can choose not to take part. You can agree to take part and later change your mind. Your decision will not be held against you. You can ask all the questions you want before you decide. Who can I talk to? If you have questions, concerns, or complaints, or think the research has hurt you, talk to the research team at jeridile@buffalo.edu. You may also contact the research participant advocate at 716-888-4845 or researchadvocate@buffalo.edu if: Your questions, concerns, or complaints are not being answered by the research team. You cannot reach the research team. You want to talk to someone besides the research team. You have questions about your rights as a research subject. You want to get information or provide input about this research. Why is this research being done? The purpose of this study is to determine if the major resources provided to teachers in New York State adhere to the focus of the Common Core State Standards for Algebra I. This study also determines if these resources address the eight Mathematical Practices that educators should develop in their students as defined by the Common Core Initiative. Of equal importance in this study is which resources teacher’s use, the frequency of use, and how they feel the resources meet the goals of the CCSS Initiative. The EngageNY modules as well as newer Common Core textbooks have not been researched as to their adherence to the rigors of the Common Core. This study will help determine how frequently the main teacher resources in New York State address the rigor of the Common Core. This study contributes to the current literature about the enacted curriculum and how well it aligns to the intended curriculum. If, in fact, teachers are unknowingly using resources that do not address the key ideas in the CCSS, teachers must be informed that supplemental materials need to be used so ensure all students are able to achieve the goals set forth in the Common Core Standards. How long will the research last? We expect that you will be in this research study for 10 – 15 minutes in order to complete the survey. The survey will be open to responses for three weeks. How many people will be studied? We expect about 100 people here will be in this research study out of 1000 people in the entire study statewide. What happens if I say yes, I want to be in this research? Your agreement in this research simply indicates that you will be completing a survey of 72 questions based on demographic information, the resources you use in your classroom, concerns you have regarding the implementation of the Common Core standards, the adequacy of your textbook and professional development opportunities. The survey will take approximately 10 – 15 minutes to complete. The data from the survey will be analyzed and stored in a secure location for a period of 3 years. What happens if I do not want to be in this research? You can leave the survey/research at any time and it will not be held against you. What happens if I say yes, but I change my mind later? You can leave the survey/research at any time it will not be held against you. Is there any way being in this study could be bad for me? There are no known risks associated with these procedures Will being in this study help me in any way? There are no benefits to you from your taking part in this research. We cannot promise any benefits to others from your taking part in this research. What happens to the information collected for the research?
