San Luis Obispo County Community College District July 2015 SENIOR CAMPUS POLICE OFFICER (Classified Bargaining Unit Position) (Range 36) DEFINITION Under general supervision of the Director of Public Safety/Campus Police Chief, assist in coordinating Police and Safety Operations for the District; perform law enforcement and crime prevention on all District property, grounds and facilities; assist the Director/Chief with other police and safety functions and services; enforce rules and regulations as required by District policy; and perform other related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Senior Campus Police Officer class is distinguished from other classes of employment in that the incumbent will serve in a lead capacity position overseeing and coordinating the activities and work of non-sworn, and Public Safety Officers while serving in various training capacities; i.e. as the Department Range Master, POST Training Coordinator, Field Training Officer, and in other training sessions, as the actual trainer. The incumbent may also serve as the Acting Sergeant in the absence of the Sergeant as duties and circumstances dictate, and as a First Line Field Supervisor. Incumbents in this position must have a valid intermediate or advanced POST certificate and a minimum of three (3) years’ experience working in an academic or municipal environment. The role of the Public Safety Department is to provide a safe environment for students, staff, and faculty through education, safety services, patrol services and enforcement activities centered on safety. Incumbents in the Senior Campus Police Officer position support student learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness by maintaining contact with the general public as well as with new and returning students through in-person and telephone communication as well as maintaining daily contact in a visual and supportive service oriented role. The incumbent in this position will also promote institutional effectiveness by patrolling District property and facilities to ensure a safe and secure learning and working environment for all students, faculty, staff, and the community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Oversee the work and training of non-sworn and sworn officers; May serve as the acting Director/Chief in the absence of the Director/Chief and Sergeant; May serve as the acting Sergeant in the absence of the Sergeant; May serve as the Department Range Master and develop courses of fire that coincide with Department’s Mission and duty requirements; May serve as the P.O.S.T. Field Training Coordinator/Manager ensuring Department compliance with P.O.S.T. standards and requirements; May serve as the actual trainer for P.O.S.T. required training and may serve as the trainer for P.O.S.T. required Perishable Skills/Field Training Officer; Patrol buildings and grounds on foot and with a District vehicle; Complete criminal reports and conducts investigations; Report criminal and unusual occurrences; May serve as the District liaison with local law enforcement agencies; Attend special training programs; Senior Campus Police Officer Page 1 of 3 Assist the Director/Chief and Sergeant in identifying and solving crime trends and chronic problems in the District; Identify available resources on campus and in the community to address actual or potential District safety and security problems; Meet regularly with the Director/Chief regarding safety and security matters in the District; Identify training needs of officers and, with the Director/Chief, coordinate the appropriate training programs; Coordinate safety and security efforts with officers assigned to other shifts; Develop and coordinate programs to foster positive relations with the campus population and Community; Assist the Director/Chief and Sergeant with employee schedules and ensure that each campus is adequately staffed; Assist the Director/Chief and Sergeant with related staff work; Assume a leadership role with safety and security operations; Develop and maintain a list of all safety and security operations at each campus; Participate in District provided in-service training programs; Maintain friendly and supportive atmosphere for students, faculty, staff, and the public; Respond to emergency medical needs; Issue illegal parking and vehicle code citations; Check scheduled meeting rooms to insure that facilities are being used by authorized persons, and that meeting(s) are under control; Transport and deposit District funds; and Perform other related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS Education: Required Equivalent to graduation from the 12th grade; Preferred Associate’s degree with a major in Criminal Justice or a closely related field; Experience: Required Three (3) years’ experience in an academic or municipal environment; Preferred Experience in a lead or supervisory capacity; Knowledge of: Law enforcement methods, security methods, crowd control techniques, and investigative procedures; Federal, state, local, and District laws, rules and regulations, including laws of arrest, legal rights of citizens, court procedures and rules of evidence; Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software; Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and District policies and procedures. Physical ability to: See for the purpose of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter; Sufficient visual acuity to accurately observe and report activities and situations; Work indoors and/or out-of-doors in varying environmental conditions; Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors; Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email; Sit or stand for extended periods of time; Lift and/or carry 50 pounds; and Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation. License and Certificates (current within the last year): Required Possession of a Valid California Driver’s License; Possession of an Intermediate P.O.S.T. certificate; Possession of First Aid and CPR certificates. Preferred Possession of an Advanced or Supervisory P.O.S.T. Certificate; Possession of a Field Training Officer Certificate.
