Session Discussion
Enhancing Research Capability in Health Informatics
Scotland is recognised as having some of the best health service data in the world and a long tradition
of data linkage to measure long term outcomes in clinical trials, safety of new medical interventions and
understand patterns of health and illness across the population. With recent publication of A Health and
Biomedical Informatics Research Strategy for Scotland (April 2015) this session will explore how
Scotland is keeping pace with scientific discovery and advances in information technology and
discussion on the opportunities and challenges presented by the growing volume, variety and

Research Funding
The NIHR, Evaluation, Trials and Studies (NETS) programmes, fund valuable independent research for
health and social care decision makers and are managed by the NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies
Coordinating Centre (NETSCC), based at the University of Southampton. CSO invests significantly to
these funding streams (such as HTA and EME) to enable access for Scottish researchers. This session
will provide useful information and advice on accessing these specialist funding remits including
eligibility, application, assessment and contracts; and highlight successful studies using these funding
streams.
