FSU SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION UNDERGRADUATE ADDMISSION APPLICATION INFORMATION IMPORTANT DATES Information Sessions November 9, 2015 (4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.) January 19, 2016 (4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.) Information sessions for the 2016 applications will be held in University Center Building D, room 1101 (UCD1101). Online Registration Form January 6, 2016 Please download and submit the Online Registration Form beginning January 6, 2016. A printed copy of the online registration form should be submitted as part of the final Admission Application Package. (Note: Please list the same email address on all of your application materials). Admission Application Package and Final Application Deadline February 1, 2016, by 5:00 p.m. EST. Please download and complete the 2016 Undergraduate Admission Application Package. The complete package and supporting materials must be received by the School of Communication on or before February 1, 2016, by 5:00 p.m. EST. Notification of Admission Decisions Friday, March 11, 2016, 5:00 p.m. EST. Students will be sent notification of the admission decisions through the email address listed in their Online Registration Form. Decisions will be released on or before Friday, March 11, 2016, 5:00 p.m. EST. Admission Appeals Friday, April 1, 2016, 5:00 p.m. EST. Letters of appeal must be received within two weeks of the “notification of admission decisions.” Appeal decisions will be released on or before Friday, April 1, 2016, 5:00 p.m. EST. 1 APPLICATION DEADLINE - Summer and Fall Admissions The Undergraduate Application Online Registration Form and all portions of the paperbased application package must be received by the “final application deadline” to be considered for both summer and fall admissions. Please note that the FSU School of Communication major program areas are limited access. With few exceptions, each major program requires two (2) years to complete. APPLICATION ELIGIBILITY Students who wish to major in Communication must have fulfilled the following requirements in order for their application to be reviewed: 1. Applicants must have an all-college GPA of a 3.0 or higher through the most recent Fall semester, 2. All required coursework and exam credits must be reflected on the submitted transcript(s) and/or the current spring class schedule(s). The required coursework and exam credits include: 1. Two (2) successfully completed Liberal Studies English courses as accepted by FSU 2. Two (2) successfully completed Liberal Studies math courses as accepted by FSU 3. A minimum of 52 completed hours of undergraduate coursework as accepted by FSU Transfer applicants currently attending a Florida public institution: The requirements of two Liberal Studies English and two Liberal Studies math courses may be met through completion of an AA degree by the end of the current application spring semester. Applicants must provide proof of graduation from their Registrar’s office. Proof is defined as a completed application to graduate in the current spring semester (which must have a signature of a university official) or a letter from the Registrar indicating that the AA degree will be earned in the current spring semester. ADMISSION CRITERIA For the areas of Advertising, Digital Media Production, and Public Relations, faculty members will review the applications, placing appropriate weight on the following factors and on materials relevant to each field: 1. GPA in all college coursework, 2. Record of academic success in communication and communication-related courses, 3. Quality of writing or video production in application materials, 4. Student’s personal statement of well-defined goals and expectations related to the chosen field, 5. Previous high school, college, or professional experiences related to the field. For the area of Media/Communication Studies, students will be admitted based upon overall GPA until all available spaces are filled. 2 NOTIFICATION OF DECISIONS Students will be sent notification regarding their acceptance or denial through the e-mail address as listed on their Undergraduate Application Online Registration Form. If admitted, on-campus students must attend a mandatory transition meeting for their program of study. The transition meeting dates/times will be included in the notification of acceptance email. Please note, transfer students will not be required to attend the above mentioned transition meeting as they will be required to attend a university orientation session at a later date. ADMISSION APPEALS When preparing an appeal, the student must demonstrate and clearly document that substantial errors affected the outcome of the admission decision and clearly document those errors. Examples of such substantial errors include but are not limited to: New information not available by the application deadline. Example: a transcript grade that was not posted through no fault of the student. Revised information not available by the application deadline. Example: a grade change or CLEP score that was not posted through no fault of the student. *Please note that a request to review an application for a second time does not qualify as a sufficient reason for appeal. Requests must contain reasons why reconsideration is warranted. You can simply indicate your second choice on the Application Cover Sheet and Online Registration Form. MANDATORY ITEMS: These items below must be included in the order listed below and stapled: (Note: Binders and folders cannot be accepted) 1. Completed copy of your Application Cover Sheet (see below, page 7). 2. Printed copy of the Application Online Registration Form. Be sure to include your contact information, email address, ***EMPID, and major program area to which you are applying on the form. (Note: Please list the same email address on all of your application materials). 3. Printed unofficial or official transcript. Transcripts are subject to verification and must reflect all college coursework attempted, including the most recent fall semester. 4. Printed copy of your current spring class schedule. 5. Personal statement indicating well-defined goals and expectations related to your chosen field. The personal statement must not exceed 500 words and should also include the following: Advertising & Public Relations Applicants: (a) Briefly state your career goals and describe any experiences related to your chosen emphasis area (i.e. internships, projects, publications, etc.). (b) Is there anything about your GPA that does not reflect your ability or potential? Digital Media Production Applicants: (a) What do you hope to get out of the Digital Media Production Program? (b) What would you contribute to the Digital Media Production Program? (c) Briefly describe a work situation in which you were involved when a problem arose. Explain how you helped to resolve the problem. Please address all three questions. SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION MATERIALS: The following supplemental materials should be stapled together with the materials listed above: Evidence of Experience: Advertising and Public Relations applicants are encouraged to submit up to three (3) portfolio items of any experiences in the profession (i.e. resume, graphic design, writing sample). Paper-based materials cannot exceed 8.5” x 11” and must 4 be stapled to the mandatory application materials. If you have work uploaded to a personal website, you may include a link to the site in your supplemental materials. Digital Media Production applicants MUST submit evidence of video work that does not exceed 5 minutes. Please be aware that supporting materials are essential to the DMP selection process. The on-line sample reel must be accessible through a URL, available on a host site such as YouTube or Vimeo. NO DVDs will be accepted - only on-line sample reels. Please include the URL on an 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper that is stapled to the other mandatory items listed above. You must indicate on the sheet of paper what you contributed to each piece. Letters of Recommendation: Advertising, Public Relations and Digital Media Production applicants may submit up to three (3) letters of recommendation (not from FSU Communication professors) that address relevant experience. Letters must be submitted with the application package. Note: Professional materials submitted as a part of the application process should be clearly labeled and may be retrieved from UCC, Suite 3100 following the completion of the application process.
