… And then there were 3!
Opening Day of the Miracle League of Southlake’s inaugural season is just around
the corner, with the first pitch being thrown on September 26 at the Texas
Rangers Miracle League Field in Southlake’s Bicentennial Park. This will culminate
a long journey first begun by Phil Meyer, Miracle League of Southlake Board Chair,
and board member Mike Mills. Opening Day festivities will begin with a Parade
of Athletes at 9, followed by the first scheduled games and lunch for the athletes.
This will truly be an exciting day for all who are involved.
We set a goal for our first season of having 100 players and at least six teams, each of which will play a six-game round
robin season. We are hoping to have four teams in the “Major” league and two additional teams in the “Competitive”
league. As of the end of June, over 60 Miracle League athletes had registered through our web site. In the next couple of
months, the Miracle League board will continue to expand its efforts to recruit players not only from Southlake but from
surrounding communities as well.
While we have had some success in recruiting and registering players, we are in need of volunteers to support our
inaugural season. Under the guidance of our Director of Coaching, Tammi Aeppli, we are seeking 2-3 coaches for each of
the six teams. If you know the fundamentals of baseball and enjoy being on the field with the players, this opportunity is
for you! As a coach, you will have a unique opportunity to directly influence each of these athletes. We encourage you
to go to our web site to register your interest.
We are also seeking buddies to support our program this season. If you have an interest in serving as a coach or buddy
(or any other volunteer roles), please register on our web site. We are currently seeking a Director of Buddies to help
coordinate this important effort; if you have interest in serving in that capacity, please contact Andi Stone, Miracle League
Executive Director, at andi@miracleleagueofsouthlake.com.
A critical part of the game day activities will be the overall atmosphere at the ballpark. Gayle Lord has agreed to serve as
the Director of Announcers, coordinating game day activities that will include walk up songs for each of the athletes. We
are also seeking a Director of Fun, an individual who can assist with activities (e.g., face painting) that create excitement
and enhance the experience for all of those in attendance.
It’s certainly not as simple as yelling ‘Play Ball’ and then watching everything unfold in our inaugural season. For us to be
successful, we will rely on many volunteers of all age levels and from around the communities we serve. If you are not
already registered to volunteer in some capacity, we encourage you to do so. Registration is simple; simply go to
www.miracleleagueofsouthlake.com and click on Registration. And if you are already signed up, a big thank you from the
board on behalf of all of the participants in the league.
The countdown to Opening Day on September 26 continues. We look forward to having you be a part of the inaugural
season of the Miracle League of Southlake. See you at the ballpark!
