1. What gives plants the energy they need to complete photosynthesis?
Plants receive the energy they need as radiant energy from the sun.
2. Which organelle captures the energy from the sun and uses it to undergo photosynthesis?
The Chloroplast
3. What is a pigment? What is chlorophyll?
A pigment is a color. Chlorophyll is a pigment that captures the energy from sunlight.
4. Where is chlorophyll found within a plant?
The Chloroplast
5. What is the job of chlorophyll during photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll’s job is to capture the energy from sunlight.
6. What is the objective of photosynthesis (energy)?
The objective of photosynthesis is to convert light (or radiant) energy to usable energy and to store energy as
glucose (stored energy).
7. Write the equation for photosynthesis (CO2WS  GO). Make sure you memorize it.
6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight  C6H12O6 + 6O2
Carbon Dioxide and Water and sunlight yield Glucose and Oxygen
8. How does your body get the energy it needs from the food you eat (what process allows cellular energy to be
made)?
Cellular Respiration converts glucose from stored energy to usable chemical energy (ATP)
9. Where does cellular respiration take place (organelle)?
The Mitochondria
10. Write the equation for cellular respiration. Make sure you memorize it (GO  CO2W And Take Prisoners!).
C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O (+ATP)
Glucose and Oxygen yield Carbon Dioxide and Water and ATP
11. How do the processes of photosynthesis and respiration relate to each other? Explain in terms of products and
reactants and in terms of light, stored, and chemical energy.
The reactants of photosynthesis are the products of cellular respiration.
The reactants of cellular respiration are the products of photosynthesis.
Therefore, they are the reverse reactions of each other.
In photosynthesis, light energy is converted to stored energy. Cellular respiration uses those products to
release (convert) glucose (sugar) into energy that can be used by the cell (ATP).
12. What does breathing have to do with cellular respiration?
Oxygen is a reactant in the cellular respiration reaction! Without oxygen, you don’t do cellular respiration
well and only get a tiny bit of energy (in a process called glycolosis that you don’t have to learn about until
high school). When oxygen is present you can make 36 ATP (net)!!
13. Compare and contrast photosynthesis and respiration (use the words: plants, animals, mitochondria,
chloroplast)
Similarities:
Both convert energy to a usable form.
Both use CO2 , H2O, C6H12O6, and O2
Differences:
Photosynthesis – plants only, Respiration = BOTH plants and animals!!
Products and reactants are reversed (COWS  GO and GO COW and take prisoners!).
Photosynthesis happens in the chloroplast
Cellular respiration happens in the mitochondria
14. In which cell would you expect to find the greatest number of mitochondria – in active cells or non-active cells?
Active cells
a. Why?
Active cells use a lot of energy, and sugar (glucose) is converted to usable chemical energy (ATP) in the
mitochondria. If you use more energy, you need to make more; therefore, you require more
mitochondria!
15. Explain how energy gets transferred from the sun to usable energy (ATP) in the cell. Use the words: radiant
energy, stored energy, chemical energy, photosynthesis, respiration, glucose, and ATP in your answer!
Light energy from the sun is trapped by the chlorophyll in the chloroplast of plant cells. Photosynthesis in the
chloroplast converts light energy to stored energy (glucose). Cellular Respiration takes the products of
photosynthesis (Glucose and oxygen) and turns the stored energy from glucose into usable chemical energy,
ATP. Cellular respiration happens in the mitochondria of plants and animals.
