A Policy for Exhibitions and the Visual Arts in Wakefield Cathedral
Wakefield Cathedral is both a visual expression of the Christian faith and a space in which
to express that faith. It embodies the human attempt to express the beauty of holiness
and the nature of the understanding of God across the centuries. We aspire to have a
vibrant and imaginative visual arts programme that enhances visitor understanding and
enjoyment of the purpose, beauty and art of the Cathedral and of our Christian faith and
heritage. The Cathedral is an important heritage site for Wakefield. We view it as a
welcoming central focal point for the whole of the community.
To that end:

We are open to requests for exhibitions form charities and other community groups
and ensure the exhibitions programme balances the informational and artistic
agenda.
The exhibition space is at the bottom of the tower steps on the left as you enter
through the West door. However, we will consider the siting of exhibitions in various
locations around the Cathedral and ensure spaces used are ‘rested’ between displays
to allow the beauty of the building to speak for itself.
We aim to actively seek suitable exhibitions from local, national and international
artists.
We aim to encourage people to develop creative skills through links with other arts,
educational and community organisations, and by the organising of creative,
participatory workshops.
We may seek sources of funding to enable the commissioning of new work, either
alone or in conjunction with others.
We may work with other cathedrals in the northern province to co-ordinate access
to new work and to promote the artistic heritage of our great buildings.
We will participate in local, regional and national initiatives, where appropriate, to
encourage as broad a range of ages and abilities as possible to enjoy the cathedral as
a place of creativity.
