As the weather heats up and summer approaches, this
is a great time to talk with students about the importance
of staying hydrated. Remind your students that H2O is
the Way to Go!

Water carries nutrients and oxygen to all cells in
the body
Water helps convert food into energy
Water regulates body temperature
1% dehydration results in thirst
There is a 10% decrease in your mental
performance when you feel thirsty
2% dehydration reduces your ability to work
If you are dehydrated you are more likely to have
trouble concentrating, be more irritable and have
more headaches

UANN 3rd Annual Summer Conference
July 23, 2013
The UANN is proud to announce that we will once again
be offering a FREE Summer Conference for teachers,
administrators and other school staff members who are
interested in teaching nutrition and integrating it into
the classroom and school day!

July 23, 2013 at the Tanque Verde Ranch
for a day of nutrition education and physical activity
training.

entries, from 13 Elementary Schools and 7 Middle
Schools. It was great reading about all the celebrations
and activities that helped students learn how to eat
right, their way, every day!

Help Your Students Earn Dinner at the
White House!
Mrs. Obama and the Let's Move! campaign are
looking for new healthy lunch recipes. Students
can create a lunch meal idea that includes each
of the five food groups and should be a meal
the students would like to eat.
Recipes must be submitted by May 12, so click
on the link below for information and entry
forms!

Nutrition Tool Kit Item Highlight
MyPlate Activity Guide
This year, the UANN provided all partner schools with a
toolkit full of nutrition education resources. One of the
items included in the toolkits is the MyPlate Activity Kit.
This kit will help you introduce MyPlate with eight fun
lesson plans and reproducible student activity sheets to
help students learn how to use MyPlate to choose a
balanced diet. Includes background information about
MyPlate, The Five Food Groups, Go and Whoa Foods,
and Focus on Fruits and Veggies. 24 pages.
Be sure to talk with your point person to check out the
book and use it in your classroom during the month of
May!
