House Duty Volunteers At Lydia’s House, there’s no typical day Between guests and volunteers and donors and strangers stopping by, those who are willing to take on house duty are taking on a lot! Here are a few things you can expect: Regular Duties 1. Answer the door. Residents are allowed to host guests on the first floor or in the yard during certain hours (see resident handbook policy). Other volunteers who are expected should be able to see themselves in. 2. Answer the duty phone. If it is an intake call ask them to call back and leave a message. 3. Make sure dinner happens if the dinner volunteer cancels. Soup/salad/sandwiches are fine! 4. Call everyone into dinner. Lead the blessing prayer or ask someone else to do it if you prefer. 5. Make sure dinner cleanup assignments are delegated. 6. Accept pre-arranged donations or food donations. Give the address for Salvation Army for clothes or home goods. 7. Sort the mail when it arrives. 8. Make sure the door is locked at 9. Note if anyone missed curfew. Give reminders after quiet hours if necessary. 9. Log the happenings of the day in the logbook in the office. Be sure to report grace-filled moments or areas of concern. 10. Please remain at the house until the next volunteer arrives. Other Opportunities Occasionally you may find yourself with time on your hands. Any of the following can be done during these down times; 1. Sweep the porch, steps, and sidewalk 2. Clean out the refrigerators (kitchen and basement) 3. Use stainless steel wipes on appliances 4. Read to kids 5. Get rid of periodicals older than two months 6. Plan a continuing education lesson for the house 7. Empty the recycling 8. Empty the compost into the backyard bin 9. Check first aid supplies in kitchen tacklebox and leave a note in the logbook of anything we need to restock 10. Put toys with missing pieces into a marked box in the office 11. Play piano 12. Write a letter of encouragement to a resident who is struggling or succeeding 13. Find something you suspect never gets cleaned and clean it 14. Empty the vacuum canister 15. Chop and freeze onions (mark date on bag w/ sharpie) 16. Do a load of kitchen laundry (if washer is unoccupied) 17. Clean the microwave 18. Sort any donations that come in 19.
