Identify major rivers of the United States of America: Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, Hudson. b. Identify major mountain ranges of the United States of America: Appalachian, Rocky. NCSS: PEOPLE, PLACES, AND ENVIRONMENTS Social studies teachers should possess the knowledge, capabilities, and dispositions to organize and provide instruction at the appropriate school level for the study of People, Places, and Environments. Learner Expectations The study of people, places, and human-environment interactions leads learners to create their spatial views and geographic perspectives of the world. Students will be able to identify the Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, and Hudson Rivers. Students will be able to identify the Appalachian Mountains and Rocky Mountains. Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Assessment Instrument (Ex. Test, Poster, Presentation, Picture, etc.) The student will be given a map and have to locate the rivers listed in the standard; Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, and Hudson, as well as locate the mountain ranges; Appalachian and Rocky. Evaluation (Grading) Instrument (Ex. Point System, Rubric, Checklist, etc.) It will be graded by participation. Every student must follow along and participate during the assignment to receive an A. Stage 3 Learning Plans Materials A picture of a map Twizzlers (or any candy to represent rivers) Hershey kisses (or any candy to represent mountains) Artifact bag Sequence of Teacher Actions *Attention-Getter/Motivator *Tie to Previous Learning The attention-getter/motivator will be the teacher saying, “If you can hear me, clap two times.” The teacher will review the major rivers and mountain ranges in America; Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, and Hudson- mountains; Appalachian, and Rocky. The teacher will discuss with the students their prior knowledge and ways to remember where each mountain and river are located. *Significant Actions to Introduce and Guide Lesson The teacher will then show a map to the students and have different students come up and pin point where the mountains and rivers are. The teacher will then read a book to the students. The teacher will have the students get into groups of 2 or 3 and pass out 1 blank map, 5 twizzlers, and 2 Hershey kisses to each group. The teacher will explain to the students that they will place the 5 twizzlers where the major rivers are and the two Hershey’s kisses where the two mountain ranges are. The teacher will go over the artifact bag with the students at the end of the activity. Sequence of Student Actions *Explain How Students Are Engaged During Lesson The students will listen to the teacher as she gives the agenda for the day. The students will then listen attentively to the teacher as she reads a book. The students will get in groups of two or three. Each group will get 1 map, 5 twizzlers, and 2 Hershey’s kisses. The students will use the 5 twizzlers to locate where the five major rivers are and the two Hershey’s kisses to locate the two mountain ranges. After the students have identified where each major river and mountain range are located, they will explain to the teacher why they put the twizzler or Hershey’s kiss at that location. * Explain How Students Discuss or Present Results of What They Did During the Lesson The students will discuss with their partner(s) where to put the five twizzlers and two Hershey’s kiss. The students will show the teacher where they placed their candy as the teacher walks by to check their work. Teacher’s Lesson Closure/WrapUp/Transition To close the lesson, the teacher will go over the learning objective with the students. The students will discuss the locations of the rivers and mountain ranges as well as share their results with the class. Adaptations for Exceptional Students (Anyone who requires modifications for their needs) Related Activities/Extensions (What can students do who need more than is in the lesson? Should be related to lesson.) Students who need modifications for their needs will set up a time after class to work individually with the teacher. Connections to Other Disciplines Language Arts is incorporated in this lesson because the teacher is reading a book to the students. There will be blank maps for students who finish early. They can locate the different oceans, prime meridian, and the equator.
