Social Studies
Students continued their study of Ancient Greece,
Democracy, and Rome. Students are starting to make
comparisons between Ancient Greece and the United States
and how Ancient Greece has influenced our culture today.
Here is a great YouTube video that correlates to our Ancient
Greece study you can view with your student at home:

Math Zone
Students are continuing to learn and implement
multiplication and division strategies. (arrays, repeated
addition, direct modeling-counters, skip counting, known
facts, drawings, number bonds, commutative property, and
distributive property). Students were introduced to tape
diagrams this week. There is an example of each of these
strategies on the last page of the newsletter. It is very
important that you are reinforcing these strategies at home
with your child.
In addition to the third grade strategies, we have
included a second grade information sheet on addition and
subtraction strategies that we use as a pdf attachment.
Students will be entering the addition and subtraction unit
after multiplication/division ends. If your child is not
familiar with these strategies, it would be good to go ahead
and start reviewing them with your child. We highlighted
the strategies that we use more in 3rd grade. (Review)

The Reading Corner
Students have been hard at work identifying thin vs.
thick question by providing evidence why. Students have also
been creating their own thick questions about Turtle Bay in
groups, partners, or individually. The students are really
starting to see the difference between thin or thick questions!
Students began a new reading skill with the story
Balto on Thursday of this week – context clues! Context clues
are other words or phrases to help with the understanding of
the new word. There are 4 strategies that help the children
attack context clues. They are synonyms, antonyms,
explanations, and examples that the text will use to help a
reader understand an unknown word. Want to help your
student work with context clues at home? Try this awesome

Science World
Students are hard at work learning about plants, erosion,
light/sound, biomes, and rocks/minerals through
engaging activities, experiments, and thinking maps! Be
sure to ask your child about what he/she is learning in
Science. Our science classes are in need of donations for
weathering and erosion experiments (vinegar, 9 x 13
disposable aluminum tins, clear plastic cups, small
empty water bottles, and baking soda). Thank you for
supporting third grade science!
Write On!
Students are continuing to write narratives in class. By
this time, students should be able to go through the
writing process on their own to complete a narrative
individually. The writing process in 3rd grade includes
the following steps: circle map, flow map, color copy,
and then a final copy. Students should be writing 5
paragraphs and using correct punctuation and
capitalization. There is a writing sample attached on
the next page of our expectations.
3rd Grade Narrative Prompt Example
1. Circle Map
2. Flow Map
3. Color Copy
4. Final Copy
The children just rewrite the color copy in pencil.
