Miss Van Winkle’s Art Blizzard Bag 5TH GRADE DAY 1: Create a drawing of an activity you chose to do on one of your snow days! Examples include: Building a Snowman, Drinking Hot Chocolate, Sledding in the Snow. There are many activities you can draw! Students are encouraged to include themselves in the drawing. The artwork is preferred to be drawn out first and then added with color. However, if supplies are low, a pencil drawing will be fine. Take your time and not rush! Please make sure to put your name on the back. DAY 2: Read ALL the directions before you begin. You are going to pick an unlikely mascot from the list, or make up your own, then you are going to draw what it would look like, do your research! Look up how the animal looks so you have a visual reference to study its features! Add any equipment or tools that they need. Be creative and make sure you show expression on their face. Describe their strengths and abilities. Demonstrate technical skill and craftsmanship in the use of materials, tools and technology to solve an artistic problem. Generate ideas and engage in thoughtful planning when solving a visual art problem. DAY 3: Materials Needed: paper and a pencil A still life is a picture, painting, or photo of an object or group of objects arranged together. It could be a drinking glass, flowers in a vase, an old shoe, a collection of tools, or a pile of toys. Step one: You will begin by walking around your house gathering safe objects, nothing sharp or dangerous, to draw. Step 2: Find a table where you may set the objects together in a group. I recommend collecting about five different items for your sketch. Step 3: Using a pencil, sketch out the basic shapes you see in your still life. Draw them VERY lightly to determine how big the objects should be and where they should be placed on the paper. Too big and they’ll run right off; too small and it will look like you chose the wrong size of paper. Your drawing should fill up most of the page, but don’t let it get too close to the edges; you’ll lose some of your picture if you frame or mat it when you’re done. When you are satisfied with your basic drawing, it's time to add the shading (dark areas where the light isn’t shining directly on to your object) and texture (the way something feels or appears to feel). Using your pencil, gently go over the objects with a light layer of graphite. This will give them the appearance of having color, even though we are drawing in "black and white." Blend the graphite in with your finger. Step 4: where you see the shadows, press a little harder on the pencil, making the area darker. *Value is how light or dark an object is! Great job on drawing a still life! Remember, to improve your drawing skills you must practice, practice, practice! Draw another still life if you have time!
