PORTFOLIO PREP: DRAWING WITH TEXT (HW) NAME:______________
LESSON FOCUS:
This lesson focuses on creating a drawing of an image (your choice) using text (words).
VOCABULARY:
Chiaroscuro: Italian word meaning “light-dark”. The gradations of light and dark values
in two-dimensional imagery; especially the illusion of rounded, three-dimensional form
created through gradations of light and hade rather than line.
Composition: The way the principles of design are used to organize the elements.
Text: A body of printed work.
Typography: The art and technique of composing printed materials from type.
PROCEDURE:







Choose an image. It can be anything, a portrait, still life, single object, landscape,
cityscape, etc.).
Layout your image lightly using pencil.
Make note of the light and dark spaces.
Fill in your image using text.
You may write anything that interests you; song lyrics, poems, random thoughts,
etc.
You may use pen, marker or both.
o Press heavy, write closer and smaller and/or overlap text to darken areas.
o Press lightly, write larger and space out letters to lighten areas.
o Some areas may be left white as long as it is purposeful and doesn’t make
the drawing seem unfinished.
Once finished, erase any stray pencil marks.
MATERIALS:



11”x 14” Bristol board
pencil and eraser (for sketches)
ball point pens or fine point markers
