11.Aims of the Programme
To meet an urgent need arising from the new national framework for teachers in the
Further Education and Lifelong Learning Sector.
To develop and enhance the meta-linguistic skills of students with regard to signed and
spoken languages.
To equip students with the essential knowledge and teaching skills to teach sign language
learners about linguistic concepts and features.
To enable students to prepare lessons using meta-linguistic knowledge.
To enable students to apply meta-linguistic knowledge to teaching in an L1 (first
language) and/or L2 (second language) situation.
12.Learning Outcomes, Teaching, Learning and Assessment Methods
A. Knowledge and Understanding
During and following successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
A1. Identify the linguistic components and features of a sign language.
A2. Identify differences in modality and linguistic features between signed and spoken
languages
Teaching and Learning Methods
A number of teaching and learning strategies will be applied during this module. Lectures
and seminars will form the core part of the teaching, and will be supplemented by group
work, workshops in the video lab, and study of a number of signed structures stored on the
network. On-line tutorials and discussion groups will be utilised outside of the block
teaching.
Assessment methods
There are no examinations, assessment is continuous and is based upon the completion of
several activities. These comprise a signed test of BSL grammar, a reflective journal and a
data analysis exercise.
B. Subject-specific skills
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
B1. Explain the difference in modality and linguistic features between signed and spoken
languages
B2. Use linguistic concepts and features in developing lesson plans for sign language
learners.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential to achieve Level 4 academic
performance and have a minimum qualification of Signature (CACDP) Level 2 in
British Sign Language (or equivalent).
