SAVE THE CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS ROLE PROFILE TITLE: Junior Advocacy Adviser TEAM/PROGRAMME: Global Advocacy Offices LOCATION: Brussels GRADE: TBD CONTRACT LENGTH: Until end of December 2016 CHILD SAFEGUARDING: Level 1: the role holder will not have contact with children and/or young people, or access to personal data about children or young people, as part of their work; therefore a police check will not be mandatory unless the content or location of the role changes, in which case the Child Safeguarding level will be reviewed. ROLE PURPOSE: Brussels is home to the European Union, a regional institution with global impact which plays a critical role in shaping children’s lives and helping to ensure their rights are fulfilled. The EU has a direct and influential role in protecting and promoting the rights of children within the EU. The Junior Advocacy Advisor will play an important role in ensuring that the EU implements and renews its commitment to protect, respect and promote children’s rights in the European Union and in accession countries. The post holder will work closely alongside our European member organisations to support our advocacy agenda, and our engagement with the Commission, European Parliament and other Brussels-based influencing targets. Our advocacy on EU domestic child rights issues is rooted in our programmes, with our work currently focused on children’s rights, migrant children and on child poverty. The Junior Advocacy adviser will play a central part in ensuring that Save the Children is a credible and visible presence in Brussels, and will also play an active role coordinating advocacy across European members. Education to Bachelor’s degree level is essential. EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS Relevant working experience on children’s rights/ poverty/ social policies/ migration at the European level, either for a non-governmental organisation or international organisation Knowledge and understanding of the EU, and its role in social policies and/or other internal EU policies Experience of supporting networks of influence, and an ability to manage diverse professional relationships, thereby securing significant new opportunities for the organisation Proven ability to speak and communicate effectively, and to tailor messages to different audiences Experience of successfully operating in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
