Mrs. Silva’s Book Review Contract This project is designed with each student’s learning style and needs in mind. Some students prefer to draw or create electronic presentations (Power Point), while others prefer to write or speak. Among the choices in this Book Review Contract, you should find something that “jumps out” as a project that fits your personal learning style and strengths. You need to choose projects that total up to ______ points. You must choose Task 1, Task 2, and one or two other tasks that equal your own Personal Point Value requirement. Task One: Summary 10 points Write a brief summary of the book (minimum of 7 sentences). Be sure to include the Title and the Author. Also, be sure to summarize the book (beginning, middle, end); do not give every specific detail. Things to include: Introduction sentence including: Title and author Summary of BEGINNING, MIDDLE, AND END…..check your plot diagram in your LA binder!! You might want to include a recommendation for the book to other readers & your reason(s) for recommending it. MUST include a CONCLUSION SENTENCE! (ex.: In the end….; I would recommend…;) Task Two: Character Comparison 10 points Choose one character from the book to whom you can compare yourself. State similarities (sameness) between you and the character. State the differences between you and the character. This can be done in paragraph form of at least 5 WELL WRITTEN sentences, Power Point (with pictures to illustrate), a poster, OR VENN DIAGRAM format (such as the one pictured here). **If using the Venn Diagram, the character’s name goes in one big circle, your name goes in the other. There, you will write about the differences. Similarities go in the middle. Character’s name Your name Write things about the character Write things about you Similarities Task Three: New Vocabulary 8 points Find at least five (5) words in the book that are new to you. Write (or type) the o word, o the page number where it is found, o the definition and part of speech (n, v, adj, adv.). You can use a “good old fashioned” dictionary, or an online dictionary for this. Task Four: Illustration 8 points Draw a picture or comic strip illustrating your favorite part of the book. Your picture or comic must have captions explaining the scene and labeling the characters. Also, please include a statement explaining the reason the scene is your favorite. Task Five: Change the Ending 10 points This is just the way it sounds. If you could be the author of the book, how would you change the ending? Be sure to include the major characters, and also explain how your ending is different from that of the story. This must be at least 2 paragraphs, minimum of 5 sentences per paragraph. Task Six: Phrase Hunt 8 points Create a list, “Wordle” (www.wordle.net) , or poster of at least 8 phrases, sentences, or dialogue (speaker’s words) from the story that you found funny or interesting. Of those 8, choose one that is your favorite or is the most meaningful to the story (include the page number where it was found), and explain why it was your favorite (1-2 sentence explanation). Task Seven: Figurative Language Hunt 8 points Find at least 6 examples of Figurative Language in your book (simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, alliteration, idiom, pun, etc.). Write the phrase or sentence, write the page number where it was found, write the type of figurative language (refer to your hand-out from Mrs. Grievo), write an explanation of the meaning of each. If you choose this task, please ask me for a figurative language chart on which you can type or write your responses (or create your own).
