I’m your Vice President Media and Communication and my role is to oversee Demon Media. Having just won the award for Best Student Media in the UK, you’re looking to make your next step up the ladder at the right time, whether you’re a fresher, third year, postgraduate or international student. I was Features Editor for The Demon last year and it was fantastic. I enjoyed the chance to write about campus stories every fortnight, it looks brilliant on my CV and being part of a society as big as Demon Media at University is so much fun. Good luck! 2|Page WHAT IS DEMON MEDIA? Demon Media is De Montfort Students’ Union’s very own award winning media group, acting as a mouthpiece for student views, opinions and interests. Boasting impressive opportunities in TV, radio, print and now online, the Demon Media group is one most successful societies on campus, winning the award for the Best Student Media group at the NUS Awards in 2013. With a student body consisting of over 21,000 students, your knowledge and skills are the most important edge we have in ensuring that Demon Media remains one of the best student societies this university has on offer. We also had over 500 members last year, with each individual taking up a role that elevated Demon Media to award winning heights. THE DEPUTY EDITOR, STATION MANAGER AND ONLINE EDITOR ARE NOT INCLUDED. THESE POSITIONS ARE CURRENTLY FILLED BUT WILL BE ELECTED AGAIN IN MAY 2014 The Demon Newspaper Deputy Editor: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Works closely with the VP of Media and Communications to ensure the effective running of The Demon throughout the academic year. Manages content and design and ensures each editor has the content on the page in time for the submission deadline. The position also requires you to lead editorial meetings on a regular basis. News Editor: Has the responsibility of gathering stories for the news section and working with the Deputy Editor to decide which story makes the front page. The News Editor must also put their copy on the page and edit each issue. CWord Editor: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Edits and manages the CWord section of the paper, gathering articles which debate current affairs around Leicester and on campus which have an impact on students lives. Features Editor: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The features editor has the responsibility of gathering content and editing their features section. The features editor is also responsible for 'Demon Girls', a page which includes the editors column and 'Hottie and Tottie'. Demon Girls has become a readers’ favourite over the last few years. Lifestyle and Arts Editor: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Responsible for gathering content and editing the Lifestyle and Arts section. The section includes articles on; travel, food, how to remain fit and healthy and arts and culture. 4|Page Music Editor: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Responsible for gathering content and editing the music section. Articles include; album reviews and music events at venues in Leicester. It should also include articles on music produced by DMU students. Film and TV Editor: This editor manages content for the Film and TV section. They must also edit their pages for each issue. This may include film reviews regarding the latest cinema releases or the latest TV shows that students will have an interest in. Societies Editor: The Societies Editor has the responsibility of gathering articles which relate to DMU's variety of societies. The editor will have to work with contributors and organise interviews with society members to fill their section. Fashion Editor: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The fashion editor must gather content regarding the latest fashion trends and articles which are of student interest. It is advised that the editor includes stories which relate to DMU's number of fashion degrees. Sports Editor: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The sports editor has the responsibility of gathering stories and editing the sports section. Ideally it will be more beneficial for the paper if they work with the Demon FM Sports Team, working together to gather match reports, interviews and features on Leicester sports clubs and DMU's very own sports teams. Proof Editor x 2: The job of the proof editors is to read through the finished issue and ensure there are no spelling mistakes and the content is suitable to go to print. There are two proof editor positions. Sub-Editor: The role of the sub-editor is to alter each section of The Demon to ensure images are in the best place possible, headlines are the correct size and articles fit on the page. Picture Editor: The picture editor's job is to work with each editor to find pictures for their articles and to organise a photographer to go to events if necessary. Head of Design: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED This role involves designing The Demon pages and managing the folders which include all 5|Page graphics which are used for each Demon issue. They must also design any additional content at the editor’s request. Demon TV Station Manager - THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED This person is expected to liaise with the majority of contacts that Demon TV will get, most notably the VP of Media and Communications. The Station Manager runs the management meetings and should keep everyone up to date with what is happening. Any big decisions that need to be made will be finalised by the Station Manager. They should have a fair understanding of what each of the other management positions involve, so a good understanding of the technology is ideal. Before being released to the public, the Station Manager should be able to say whether or not a video needs improvement or not. Finally, the Station Manager should understand that, while being Station Manager is a big responsibility, they should never forget that Demon TV is supposed to be fun for everyone involved. Head of Programming - THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED This is essentially the Deputy Station Manager. All admin involving the programming should be done by the Head of Programming. Programmes are the original content produced by Demon TV, which could involve panel shows, dramas, comedies, etc. This person should be comfortable with the ideas that should be produced into videos. If multiple shows are produced at once, the Head of Programming should have an idea of a release schedule. This person should work with the other managers to help keep track of what is being produced. All programmes should be checked by this person before being released to the public. Head of Live Events - THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Demon TV made its name through covering events, so this is a very important role. Any events that Demon TV can cover should be coordinated by the Head of Events, aided by the Station Manager for particularly large events (such as Varsity) if needed. As ever, any events coverage should be checked by the Head of Events before being released to the public. Head of Entertainment - THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Entertainment covers comedies, chat shows, panel shows and much more. The Head of Entertainment should work directly with the Head of Programming, and also with the other managers where appropriate. For example, when covering live comedy, the Head of Entertainment should be coordinating with the Head of Live Events. Any entertainment 6|Page programmes should be checked by the Head of Entertainment before being released to the public. Head of Music - THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Should be involved in the music scene in some way and should have a fair number of contacts in the music industry. If they choose to do so, they will be the producer of Demon TV's current music programme, DMUsic. Again, should work directly with the Head of Programming and Live Events where appropriate. It is also important that the Head of Music liaise with the music teams from the other strands in case an opportunity for joint promotion arises, and to avoid potential clashing. All music coverage is to be reviewed by the Head of Music before being released to the public. Head of Sport - THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Should have a good relationship with the sports officers from the Students' Union, as well as a number of the sports teams. They should have a good idea of how to coordinate the coverage of Varsity as early as possible, liaising with the Head of Live Events. All sports coverage should be reviewed by the Head of Sports before being released to the public. Head of Marketing and Social Media - THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED Responsible for getting Demon TV's image out there, both on the web and on the street. This person should play a big part in promoting Demon Media during Freshers' Week. Liaising with the marketing teams from other strands is also a must. Head of Tech - THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The Head of Tech is the master of the equipment. This person should know the ins and outs of every piece of equipment that Demon TV has. A heavy emphasis for this is with the live streaming equipment. Ensuring the safety of the equipment is also a necessity, and if necessary should receive the relevant training in order to be able to safely use some of the larger equipment, such as the lighting kit. Demon Media Online Online Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The Online Editor will need to oversee all content being uploaded onto the website whilst maintaining constant communication with all of the editors. They will need to ensure that weekly meetings take place to discuss any issues/plans with regards to the website. They would also need to communicate with all strands of Demon Media to ensure that collaboration is taking place through the website. They will need to check for grammatical errors that may have been missed by the section editors and try to give relevant feedback to ensure the website is at the best standard possible. Music Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED This person should have a keen interest in music and be open to writing about all styles and genres. They would need to ensure that content is uploaded weekly whilst keeping up to 7|Page date with new releases and albums. They should include all forms of media including videos, articles and links. The Editor will oversee and upload all content from contributing Demons onto the music section of the website whilst checking for errors in articles. Fashion Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED This person should enjoy all aspects of fashion including men’s and women’s. They should keep up to date with trends and styles that are in season whilst focusing on a student readership. They would need to oversee and upload content from all contributing Demons onto the Fashion section of the website whilst checking for errors. The Editor should include pictures and videos to compliment the articles. Film & TV Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The Film & TV Editor should have a keen interest in watching newly released films whilst looking at all-time favourites (especially those of students). They should keep up to date with TV series and dramas to ensure that articles will cover all genres broadly. They will need to oversee and upload content from all contributing Demons onto the Film & TV section of the website whilst checking for errors. They should include pictures and trailers to compliment the articles and preferably give a star rating for each film/series. Lifestyle Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The Lifestyle Editor would need to have an interest in local events including food, festivals, comedy and much more. They would need to oversee and upload content from all contributing Demons onto the Lifestyle section of the website whilst checking for errors. The Editor should ensure that all articles are relevant and interesting to students whilst constantly seeking out new stories from around the city. Features Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The Features Editor would need to look at local stories especially those relevant to students such as housing, student life and more. They would need to oversee and upload content from all contributing Demons onto the Features section of the website whilst checking for errors. They should be eager to seek out new stories in the Leicester area that would keep students informed and interested. CWord Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The CWord Editor should look at interesting and controversial issues and discuss them through articles. They will need to focus on issues relating to students, allowing the opportunity for debates. They would need to oversee and upload content from all contributing Demons onto the CWord section of the website whilst checking for errors. Sports Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The Sports Editor would need to have a keen interest in all sport (not just football!) and write about the main games in the UK, mainly focusing on the Leicester area and University Sports. They will need to oversee and upload content from all contributing Demons onto the Sport section of the website whilst checking for errors. 8|Page News Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The News Editor needs to have an interest in world affairs and local news. They will need to focus on the main news stories in the world whilst maintaining a key focus on local stories, especially those relating to students. They would need to oversee and upload content from all contributing Demons onto the News section of the website whilst checking for errors. Politics Editor- THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED The Politics Editor would need to focus on key political issues especially those that affect students i.e student fees. They would need to communicate with the Politics Society and introduce a number of issues whilst maintaining a fair argument. They would need to oversee and upload content from all contributing Demons onto the Politics section of the website whilst checking for errors. ELECTIONS TIMETABLE Below is a diagram that displays when the different events of the election will occur. If you wish to be nominated for a certain role, please make sure that you remember these deadlines. Nominations Opening • September 30th- 10am Nominations Close • October 4th- 4pm Manifesto Deadline • October 4th- 5pm Voting Opens • October 7th- 10am Voting Closes • October 11th- 4pm All of the voting will be done online, which will be active as of Tuesday September 30th at 10am. Only Demon members will be allowed to vote in the elections, who will receive an email with a PDF of the nominees’ manifestos and a link to online voting. Each member will also be able to see your manifestos online. 9|Page WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? In order to be nominated for a particular position within Demon Media, you will need to be a Demon member. If you haven’t already done so, you can go to www.demonmedia.co.uk/getinvolved or https://www.demontfortstudents.com/getinvolved/media/ to sign up today for the discounted price of £10. To stand in these elections you will also need to fill out the manifesto form online before the deadline date stated above. PLEASE NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STAND IN THESE ELECTIONS IF YOU SUBMIT YOUR MANIFESTO AFTER THE STATED DEADLINE. Your manifesto should outline your intentions for the role within the year and why you think people should vote for you. You can provide personal information too. An example of what you might want to include in your manifesto is on the next page, and although we can help you think of what you might like to consider, we are unable to help you write this. Please make sure that you include a photo with your manifesto. This does not have to be a passport style photo. You can include one from Facebook or Twitter if you wish to do so. Things to consider when writing your manifesto: Don't talk about other candidates. Do not make promises that you are unlikely to be able to keep. Do not make promises that relate to areas outside your area. You can mention any involvement you've had in the University and/or Union. You can mention your skills, knowledge and experience. You should talk about what you would like to do once elected. Try and use plain English and be clear and concise. I’m a massive sports fan and have been my whole life. I love each and every single sport and I want to make sure that they all receive a brilliant array of TV coverage. I also love editing and producing documentaries and short films. And I wish to one day do this as a career. I’m a really down to earth kind of guy and I hope I can count on your vote during this election. I believe that I will bring not only my desire to create substantial sports programmes for Demon TV, but also the essential knowledge and skills that will keep each and every one of our viewers fully satisfied. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE FOR ME: I believe you should vote for me because I’m the right man for the job. Yes, I have my ideas that I believe will enhance our TV station, but I need your help just as much as the entire station needs your help. I want us all to develop our ideas into reality. I came to university wishing to pursue a career in the media and TV production, and I’m sure many of you voting are wishing to do the same. With that in mind, I know each of you have your own spectacular sporting ideas that I believe should be shared with the rest of the student body. 11 | P a g e If you vote for me, I will make sure that they come to the sporting forefront of Demon TV. HOW DO I VOTE? The elections will be conducted entirely online through Demon Media’s website at www.demon-media.co.uk/vote. From here you will be able nominate yourself for a particular role and Demon members will be able to cast their vote through a simple tickbox system. You will only be allowed to vote once for a single person, although you can vote in each of the elections for the different roles. Once the votes have been collected and counted, the successful candidates will be revealed on the Demon Media website. Any votes made after the closing date mentioned above will not be counted towards the final count. Once voting has closed the final count will take place between the Election Official, Charlie Bull, and the VP Media and Communications.
