The Pain Management Plan
A cognitive behavioural approach supporting self-management of chronic pain
SIGN Guideline 136 Management of Chronic Pain
Key Recommendation 2.2 Supported Self Management
Healthcare professionals should signpost patients to self help resources, identified and recommended by local pain services as a useful aide at any point throughout the patient journey. Self management may be used from an early stage of a pain condition through to use as part of a long term management strategy.

The Pain Management Plan is a cognitive behavioural workbook based programme that enables people with pain gain self management knowledge, skills and resources. The programme is used in face to face or telephone, e-mail resource or in self management groups. It evolved from evidence base of Professor Bob Lewin, while at the Health Sciences Rehabilitation Unit at York University. He developed effective cardiac rehabilitation programmes and a similar approach is used in this resource.
This Pain Management Plan programme was commissioned by Dr Frances Cole for NHS Bradford +
Airedale in 2009 so more people with pain can access cognitive behavioural approaches to self management. It includes a CD based relaxation programme and both these resources are available from www.pain-management-plan.co.uk
Evidence from patient reported outcomes. Bradford Teaching Hospitals Pain Rehabilitation Service,
Birmingham Community Healthcare Pain Service and Gloucester and Herefordshire Pain Management
Programme Services, evaluated this workbook programme in 2010.
Evaluation has found that the Pain Plan workbook plus support in skills training is favourably received by 80% of patients. Four – six sessions seems sufficient for most patients to achieve significant increase in self efficacy and reduction in pain related disability. Dropout rate appears small and linked to life issue problems.
Trained practitioners enjoy using the Pain Management Plan and find it motivates patients to engage in self management. It improves their clinical contact time efficiently and effectively.
Where does it fit in a pathway? The Pain Management Plan is designed for Tier 2/3 patients in and can be delivered in both clinical and non-clinical settings including patients’ homes
One full day training courses are provided for a wide range of pain management clinicians working with patients with long term pain.
Two day training programme for Health Care Practitioners without skills in pain management.
Bespoke training programmes can be arranged for whole services or teams – please ask for further details
Training is lead by clinicians who have developed, used and evaluated the resource. This enables faster implementation, evaluation and effective delivery by clinicians in a multitude of settings.
Over four hundred practitioners have now been trained and The Pain Management Plan is being used in multitude of settings from IAPT services to community and specialist pain services.
“A new and leading approach in treating chronic pain. The PMP book not only helps guide patients, but helps guide therapists with a thorough approach/plan to treating this client group” (participant June 2013)
