best we can.”
School Mission
“Working together, playing together, learning to be the best we can.”
We are very proud of our school and of what we all achieve. At Wansdyke we
aim to encourage all our children to achieve their fullest potential, not only in what
they learn in the classroom, but across the whole spectrum of school life.
We believe that happy motivated children achieve most. All the staff take great
care to ensure the school is a place where children will be happy, whilst learning
to express themselves fully and to develop as individuals.
School Aims
• To provide a secure, safe, happy and caring learning environment where all
differences are celebrated.
• To develop respect, concern and understanding for each person’s individuality.
• To build and nurture confidence and self-esteem for every individual so they can
be the best they can.
• To give all children the chance to reach their full potential and recognise that
success comes in many forms.
• To encourage each child to be an independent learner who is self-motivated,
shows initiative, perseveres and takes risks.
• To develop in the children a passion and excitement for learning that develops
enquiring and questioning minds.
• To implement a broad, balanced and creative curriculum that reflects the
demands of our changing world.
• To work in partnership with parents, valuing open and effective communication.
• To promote and build awareness of citizenship and the need to look after our
planet.
• To encourage the understanding of a healthy lifestyle.
• To enable children to become independent lifelong learners who succeed as
individuals and as responsible and valued members of the community.
• To promote the school as a wider part of the community.
The Organisation of Our School
Our School
Wansdyke School was built in 1974. It is a large building varying in age, the most
recent being the addition of KS2 classrooms in 2004, which gives us a bright and
modern annex with lots of space. We have 9 classrooms as well as an ICT suite,
library and outdoor learning environment. We also have a school hall with sports
equipment and a portable stage, which we use for PE, midday meals and school
productions. The school comes together twice a week for whole school assembly.
In February of 2013 the school converted to Academy status.
The Children
There are currently 232 children on roll at Wansdyke School between the ages of 4
and 11 years old, organised into seven mainstream classes and two complex needs
classes. Reception/EYFS children usually join us having been to Noah’s Ark, the preschool on our school site, although we take children from a variety of other preschool settings. At the end of Year 6 most of the children transfer to Devizes School,
although some children go to other Secondary Schools.
A variety of teaching and organisational strategies are used to deliver the
curriculum each day. The School employs many teaching assistants to support the
children’s learning. We encourage the children to enjoy working both
independently and co-operatively. We provide strategies, which help the children
to be aware of where they are with their work and what they need to do to move
forward. We involve them in setting their own targets.
The Complex Needs Resource Base
Our school also has a 20 place Complex Needs Resource Base which supports
children from the Devizes area through full time places. It has been set up to support
children with complex needs and moderate to severe learning needs. The children
are taught in two different classes and the classes are divided by the needs of the
children, rather than their age. Each class works towards raising each child’s
confidence in a variety of areas of development. We have a wealth of Teaching
Assistants who support the children and the class teachers to maximise the learning
experiences for the children. As much as possible we aim to enrich the children’s
lives by expanding their experiences and their key skills. We also have support and
involvement from outside agencies such as the Educational Psychologist, Speech
and Language Therapist and the Physiotherapist.
School Environment
Wansdyke School benefits from exceptional grounds including a large field, conservation
area,
specific
outdoor
learning
environment, and purpose built outdoor
climbing areas.
We have a Scrapstore PlayPod which
has transformed play times into much
more creative and inclusive periods
where children interact in very different
ways than traditional sports play.
Children work together in supervised
play to assess and manage risks
associated with building truly unique play
times.
The outdoor learning approach is
fundamental to the Wansdyke teaching
style and all classes have at least one
learning experience a week that is not PE
related conducted outdoors.
All of these activities help to improve
children's physical engagement, learning
focus, interaction, team working,
problem solving and creativity.
