From Land’s End to John O’Groats Land’s End- the southern tip of Britain. Britain is the name of the island. The U.K. is the name of the country which includes Britain and Northern Ireland. Cornwall- is famous for beaches and coves. People drink cream tea, and eat ‘pasties’. There is a big glass dome called the Eden Project. Inside, the weather is very warm! Stone Henge- This collection of stone monuments is over 4000 years old! Brighton- This seaside town has a stone beach, a long pier, and a famous pavilion. Dover- This town has huge white cliffs. You can take the boat or Channel tunnel to France in under 60 minutes. London- The capital city, with 7.5 million people. Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben are the most popular places to visit. There are many famous museums and many green parks. Harrod’s is the oldest department store in the world. There is an old castle called the ‘Tower of London’. There is also a huge ferris wheel called ‘The London Eye’. The Prime Minister of Britain lives at the house on No 10, Downing Street. Windsor- This town is near London. It is on the River Thames. There is a huge castle where the Queen sometimes lives. Oxford- This town is also on the river Thames. It has the oldest University in Britain, and one of the biggest book shops in the world. Cambridge- This town has a famous university. Every year, the students have a rowing race with Oxford University. Just like in Oxford, the English dictionary is made here. Bath- This town is Britain’s only hot spring resort. The baths are very old and were built by Romans 2000 years ago. The town has many beautiful buildings. Cardiff- The biggest city in Wales. The favourite sport of Welsh people is rugby. Wales- This small country used to be separate from England. There are many castles in Wales. Welsh people have their own language. Many Welsh people like singing. Snowdon- This is the most beautiful mountain in Wales. Birmingham- is the 2nd biggest city in Britain. 1 million people live there. Stratford Upon Avon- was the home of England’s most famous writer, William Shakespeare. Nottingham- In ancient times the hero Robin Hood lived in the Sherwood forest. England- In ancient times, 4 races of people lived in Britain- Angles, Saxons, Picts and Celts. England was first formed by Anglo-Saxons. Over the years, Romans came from Italy, Normans came from France, and Vikings came from Norway. England is famous for many things, including football, rugby, cricket, afternoon tea, the BBC and the industrial revolution. Manchester- this city is famous for Manchester United football club. There is also a popular TV drama called ‘Coronation Street’. British people love to watch it! York- is a very old walled city. It was built by Vikings who invaded Britain over 100 years ago. New York in USA was named after this city. Liverpool- This city is famous for ‘The Beatles’. People from Liverpool are called Scousers and have a different accent. Isle of Man- This small island is a very strange place. There are cats with no tails, sheep with 4 horns, special money and a different language called ‘Manx’. Northern Ireland- This area of Ireland is part of Britain. There was a long terrorist battle here called ‘The Troubles.’ There are unusual sea rocks called the Giant’s causeway. Lake District- This area has beautiful mountains. lakes, and old villages. People who climb the mountains often eat a special sweet mint cake. Newcastle- This is the northernmost town in England. People who live here are called Geordies, and have a different accent. Near Newcastle there is an ancient wall that separates England and Scotland. It was built by Romans. Scotland- Scotland used to be a separate country, and had a Scottish King and Queen. Now, it is part of the UK., but it has different money, laws and customs. The strangest things are kilts and bagpipes. Glasgow- Is the largest city in Scotland. Along with London, it is the only city in the UK with a subway. The Glasgow subway is called the Clockwork Orange. The trains are so small that tall people can hardly stand up. Edinburgh is the oldest city in Scotland. It has a famous castle on a rock, and many old buildings. There is also an old broken volcano in the middle of the city called Arthur’s Seat. St Andrews- Golf was invented in this old town. In old times, there were 21 holes oh the golf course and men drank one glass of whisky before every hole! Dundee- Fish and Chips was first sold at this seaside town. Glencoe- This is a cold, snowy valley in North Scotland. There was an infamous massacre here around 400 years ago. The MacDonald clan were killed by people of the Campbell clan. To this day, people are still bitter about the massacre. Ben Nevis- is the highest mountain in the UK. It is 1344m high. Aberdeen- near this town, there are famous ‘Angus’ cows- used for delicious beef. Balmoral- This is the Queen’s 3rd residence. It is a large castle with hills, lakes and woods. There are many deer on the grounds Loch Ness- This long lake is very deep. All lakes in Scotland are called ‘Lochs’. Some people believe a strange monster lives under the water. Skye- There are many islands on the west of Scotland. They are famous for making Scotch Whisky. People here speak a different language called ‘gallic’. John O’ Groats- is the northern tip of Britain.
