Lyminge School Newsletter w/b 26th November 2012 Term 2 Issue No 168 Website: www.lyminge.kent.sch.uk 01303 862367 Email: headteacher@lyminge.kent.sch.uk Dear Parents, Despite the wet and windy weather, last weekend was fab! On Friday night at the school disco, children (and parents) danced the night away – many, many thanks to the PFA, staff and DJ Miles the Smiles. On Saturday you heard the children singing carols and opening the church’s St Nicholas Fayre in the morning, and also singing around the Christmas tree later that afternoon. They sang like angels, and got a “sweet” heavenly reward today, as a thank you from the school. I never thought we’d do it, but our target of 3,000 acts of kindness may just be in reach. Please can you help us by popping in a kindness counter or two in the jar. We currently have 2,532 - I’ll be around to see you in the playground to see if you can add some more! At Friday’s Christmas Fayre we will be announcing the final total to end November’s Anti Bullying Month on a high note. This week it’s the annual Money and Enterprise Week when the children in every class will be investigating and problem solving the real life problem of making a profit at Friday’s Christmas Fayre. Each class has/will brainstorm money making ideas for their own stall, working out prices, publicity etc and then putting ideas into action at 3.30-5.00pm at Friday’s Fayre. As Numeracy Coordinator, this year we have been focussing on practical problem solving in numeracy and I’m delighted that Paula Stone, a Christchurch University Numeracy Lecturer, will be delivering further training to all teaching staff tomorrow Tuesday evening after school. Last year, you may remember our school was chosen to contribute to an Ofsted report on the teaching of calculation in numeracy. Please bring everyone you know to Friday’s Christmas Fayre. There will be stalls galore including class stalls selling many fine Christmas goodies made by your child. There will be a wide variety of stalls and fun games for children to play. The Christmas café will be open in the Years 3 and 4 activity area, when the festivities get too much and you need to sit down. The fayre will be opened at 3.30pm by Santa himself, who will then be in his grotto (the New Room) – where you can meet him (no charge) and get a Christmas gift from Santa for only £1. Please note, this year the PFA will not be taking photos of your child with Santa- you are welcome to take your own photos of your child on a camera or phone. Remember there will be no Moose Club this Friday due to the Fayre. It does get very crowded so, for health and safety purposes, we ask you please to leave pushchairs outside, under the covered area near the outside entrance door. 97 gift boxes were collected from this school last week as our contribution to Operation Christmas Child. This was the highest ever we’ve sent off. THANK YOU ALL. Thanks also to Year 5 School Councillors who hand delivered a School Council letter to Church Road residents asking for their input on our traffic problems, last Wednesday afternoon. You’ve had your first reply already. Year 6 parents will join with me in passing on their thanks to Mrs Thomas, Mr Miles and Mrs Milton who, together with Year 6, gave us a memorable look back at their trip to Arethusa last Wednesday evening. The closing date is today, Monday November26th, for the School Council’s Anti Bullying poster competition, with the winners being announced at Friday’s Christmas Fayre. Good luck! Attention all children born between 01/09/08 and 31/08/09 due to start school in September 2013. Please join us at our Open Day next Monday December 3rd - when Year 6 tour guides will show you around our school. Please contact the office or ring 01303 862367 to book a place at either 11am or 2pm. Hurry, places on the tour are filling fast. A virulent but short lived sickness bug is sweeping through school. Please be reminded that everyone is welcomed back to school 48 hours after the last time they were ill. Any reminders you give at home about hand washing etc is much appreciated. Next Wednesday afternoon 5th December, it’s Presents for Parents in the hall. The PFA have asked me to tell you th that this Thursday 29 November is the final collection day for your much needed donations of new (or as good as new) gifts for this popular event. You have been very generous – but more gifts are urgently needed please, otherwise there may not be enough to go round for every children to choose a present. Thank you so much, in advance. If you can help with wrapping presents, please tell the office or the PFA. Also, please return any unsold raffle tickets to the PFA. It’s countdown to Christmas already, get those Christmas puddings stirred! See you Friday at the Christmas Fayre at 3.30pm. Have a great week. Cyfarchion – Alison Steel PFA News ……..
