Ranch Team Rules
Calf Branding: 45’ rope minimum

Each team will be required to brand 2 calves.
Time starts when team is ready.
Walk Trot rule in effect, no loping unless to avoid a wreak.
There will be an 8 minute time limit.
Two members will work the ground.
After the first calf is branded, the team members will change places.
Ground crew must be in designated area before any loop is thrown and must stay in
designated area until calf is headed and heeled. Ground crew leaves when heeler
has dallied.
8. Calf must be headed before heeler can make his catch.
9. The head catch must be around the neck or around the neck and one front leg. Belly
catches are illegal.
10. The heeler may catch one or both hind feet.
11. The ground crew may assist in removing illegal catches or dropped ropes but must
return to the designated area before another rope is thrown.
12. As soon as calf is headed and heeled, ground crew may leave designated area,
throw calf, and switch ropes. If the calf gets up while switching ropes, the
ground crew can continue working on the animal as long as the animal
has a rope on one end but the calf must be stretched by all four feet
before the brand may leave the branding circle.
13. You may not take the iron with you to work the ground.
14. Ground crew must return to designated area after each calf is branded.
15. Time stops when the last calf is branded, and all ropes are off the calf.
16. Any cattle called for are yours.
17. If a roper falls from his horse, or drops his rope ground crew can only grab rope to avoid an
accident.
Calf then has to be released, and if roper is able to remount with no equipment
failures, then he can re-rope his designated end and the team run can be
completed.
18. No one except team members, judges, and/or WSRRA officials will be allowed in the
arena.
19. Arena director and judges will have the final say on any disputes.
20. Brand location will be announced during team meeting.
21. Penalties are as follows:
 Botched or bad brand 30 seconds
 Branded on wrong side Disqualification
 Unnecessarily rough on cattle 90 seconds
 Leaving designated area early 30 seconds
 Not observing walk trot rule/loping over 3 strides 30 seconds
 Iron touches ground 30 seconds
Sort & Rope Doctoring: 45’ rope minimum
1. Team will sort out two numbered cows from herd. Maximum 3 team members in the
herd. Cattle will go through gate. Walk Trot rule in effect, no loping unless to avoid
wreak.
2. Cattle cannot be roped until they pass thru the gate.
3. Team will head and heel cattle.
4. Legal head catches only (neck, half head, or horns). Front leg is allowed.
Belly catch must be removed before cow can be marked.
Belly catch will be counted as one loop.
5. Cow will be marked on forehead by dismounted team member.
6. Time stops when both cows are doctored and all ropes removed.
7. Limit of 8 loops and 8 minutes.
8. Penalties:
 Every dirty cow through the gate - 30 seconds
 Any cow roped before thru gate- 30 seconds
 Not observing walk trot rule/loping more than 3 strides- 30 seconds
 Penalties will be added to the total time for the team.
9. As stated in the Contestant Code of Conduct, roughing the cattle will not be allowed.
Any violation will be a disqualification for that event.
Team Alley Sorting:
1. Each team required to sort calves with even numbers into one pen, odds into the other.
Maximum 2 team members in the herd. Walk Trot Rule in Effect
2. Odds/Evens direction will be called out. Direction will change when next team comes in.
3. Must sort all calves into given pens.
4. Time will stop when all calves are past gate openings into odds or even pens.
5. Penalties:
 Dirty cow - 30 seconds
 Maximum of 2 dirty cows
 3 dirty cows - no time
 Loping more than 3 strides - 30 seconds
Team Trailer Loading
1. All four team members start behind Judges line, 4 loops and 4 minute time limit.
2. When Judges drops his flag the announcer will call out the number of the animal to be
sorted, roped and loaded, after flag is dropped team members can ride to animal, no
loping until herd breaks.
3. All four team members are to be on their horses when start flag is dropped.
4. After animal is roped it is to be loaded into trailer, NO HORSES IN TRAILER.
5. Time stops when animal is loaded and gate shut.
