About This Performance
Performance date is February 21, 2016 at 3:00pm at Maritime Museum of the
Atlantic, Halifax
All free family concerts take place at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. These
concerts are free and do not require a ticket to attend.
Featuring
Peter Oleskevich, conductor
Lala Lee and Andrew Son, piano
We combine two pianos, an orchestra, and a zoo of musical sounds for SaintSaëns’ beloved Carnival of the Animals! From lions and elephants to donkeys
and kangaroos, this clever, funny work brings all your favourite animals to life in a
delightful musical adventure.
This concert also features a “sensory friendly” performance especially for those
with autism or developmental disabilities. Sensory friendly performance: 1:30 pm
(45 min).
Poetry Contest
We are collecting original poems to be read during the concert on February 21st
and are asking students to use their creative writing skills as part of the contest.
We encourage teachers to take advantage of this creative writing opportunity.
Any type or classification of poetry is considered an acceptable entry.
Winning poems will be read by the winning student poet or our emcee
during the concert on February 21.
Contest entry deadline: Friday, December 11, 2015
Students are encouraged to submit an original poem on any of the following
subjects. One poem per subject will be selected for reading as part of the
performance.
1. Marche royale du lion (Royal March of the Lion)
2. Poules et coqs (Hens and Roosters)
3. Hémiones—Animaux véloces (Wild Donkeys—Fleet Animals)
4. Tortues (Tortoises)
5. L'éléphant
6. Kangourous (Kangaroos)
7. Aquarium
8. Personnages à longues oreilles (People with Long Ears)
9. Le coucou au fond des bois (Cuckoo in the Depths of the Woods)
10. Volière (Aviary)
11. Pianistes (Pianists)
12. Fossiles (Fossils)
13. Le cygne (The Swan)
Poem length: Maximum of 50 words
Eligibility: Anyone ages 9-12 (grades 3 or 4 through 6)

Winning poems will be read by the winning student poet or our emcee
during the concert on February 21.
Contest entry deadline: Friday, December 11, 2015
Prizes will be available to all winning entries featuring a special gift from Woozles
Children’s Bookstore.
Contest winners will be announced at the concert and will be posted on the
Symphony Nova Scotia website. All decisions of the Symphony Nova
Scotia poetry contest panel are final.

Debussy, John Williams, Ralph Ford, Gustav Holst, and more.
