Presenting Presentations: A Guide to Effective
Presentations
If you dread public speaking, you are not alone! According to the National
Institute of Mental Health, 74% of people suffer from Glossophobia
(public speaking). However, mastering the skill of public speaking is
incredibly important for any health care professional. Becoming
comfortable giving effective presentations takes practice. The following
handout provides a few important tips that can help anyone become a
better presenter.
Good Luck and ENJOY!!!
Our Goal: To provide a practical and interactive approach to the
preparation and implementation of effective presentations employing
multiple presentation modalities
Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to;
1. identify components required to effectively prepare a
presentation
2. apply concepts of effective presentations to the creation of
their own presentations
3. compare different modalities used for presenting with an
understanding of how to use each modality
Lesson Plan:
1:00 – 1:10: Introductions - Hello! Pleased to meet YOU!
1:10 - 1:20
Icebreaker “What’s Your PROBLEM!??!?”

MODALITIES OF CHOICE!
PowerPoint is a common (Microsoft) program that enables the presenter
to deliver information in an interesting and logical format. Once slides
have been made, they can be reused, in fact, many presenters consider
their PowerPoint slides ‘proprietary’.
10 Tips to a Great PowerPoint
1.
Keep it simple; the fewer the words the better. Use several simple
slides instead of one complex slide
2.
Headlines should be specific and action oriented
3.
Design the presentation for the person in the last row
4.
Use the 10 second rule; if it takes longer than 10 seconds to read a
side then it has too much content
5.
Avoid combining red/green, brown/green, black/blue, blue/purple
6.
Background color should be dark and text color should be light for
greatest contrast (or vice versa)
7.
Make visuals available as handouts to be given to the audience
prior to your speech
8.
Keep data and visuals simple
9.
Avoid having background images such as logos on every slide
10. Use a remote control to change the slides to allow you to move
around the ‘stage’ and into the audience
Prezi is a relatively new program that offers a creative alternative to
PowerPoint. Those in support of Prezi claim that it allows the audience to

retain more of the presented knowledge due to its non-linear approach.
Prezi is a free online program that operates “in the cloud”, allowing many
users to access the same project from any computer. This has many
advantages, including allowing people who are not in close physical
proximity to one another to work together. Prezi can be found at
www.prezi.com. The website is very easy to navigate, and offers a variety
of ways to learn how to create a Prezi (webinars, cheat sheets, videos, etc).
Using TECHNOLOGY when Presenting!
Benefits to using Online Modalities
Collaborate – It doesn’t matter where you are!
Debate – able to bring in a more diverse group
Create – new platforms allow sharing and editing
Mentor / Supervise – Provide support
Didactic – class lectures, broadcast to several locals,
guest speakers
 Observe - can ‘watch’ from afar





ONLINE TEACHING IS A GOOD ‘COMPLEMENT’ TO
FACE TO FACE
Technologies that can be useful:





Skype
WebEx
Portals
Twitter (Twuffer…) & Facebook
HootSuite
