During the course of the school year you will undertake yard work on a regular basis. Every few weeks you
will be required to complete a schedule of routines. This will require you to spend several days on the yard
during the course of the year so that you can experience how a fully functioning yard operates on a daily /
weekly basis
Over the year you will look after a variety of horses. For your routine weeks you will be given horses and the
basic welfare of these horses will be your responsibility while you are on routines. You will be expected to
provide: (P10)
 A clean hygienic stable with fresh bedding when required
 Feed and water
 A daily groom
 Information to the yard staff on any health issues the horses may be suffering from
 Care for the horses saddle and bridle
You must keep a log of your routine activities. (P1, P2) Plan and carry out daily and weekly stable
routines(P1) Monitor daily and weekly stable routines (P2)
You will be graded for your routine duties and these will be received and discussed within your tutorials
You will be observed on your ability to demonstrate that you understand and can undertake a safe working
ethic whilst working around horses. Your tutor will write a witness statement and complete some observation
records to evidence this. (P12, M1)
