COURSE OUTCOMES CHINESE INTERMEDIATE II (ELEMENTARY 7-13-YO) (September 2013) The Chinese Intermediate II Course is designed for Elementary students (seven to thirteen years of age) with background in the Chinese language and who have completed the Chinese Intermediate I course. It is centered on the practical application of communication skills, with an emphasis on the language material used in everyday situations. Grammar is taught primarily through speech patterns. In order to develop interpersonal listening and speaking skills, interpretive reading and listening skills, and performance writing and speaking skills, the students will be involved in a variety of activities, including songs, role-play, educational games, and authentic reading and writing tasks. The students will also become acquainted with some cultural features of the language. This course supports and is aligned to the success orientations, competencies, and knowledge noted in the QSI Program Outcomes. The Chinese Intermediate II Course consists of 6 essential units and 4 selective units. This course is divided into Essential Outcomes and Introduced/Practiced Outcomes. The Essential Outcomes must be assessed for mastery. The Introduced/ Practiced Outcomes are intended to expose the student to skills that will be mastered in a future essential unit, engage the student in ongoing and necessary skills, and to practice the outcomes previously taught. The normal pace for this course leads to mastery of the 6 essential units for those QSI schools that offer Chinese three to five times a week. Those schools that offer Chinese language five times a week will have to master 6 essential units as well as 4 selective units presented in this course. Some of the units may take more time than others. Depending on the individual school programs, Intermediate I could be allotted three to five times a week with a period being approximately 45 minutes. This course is a prerequisite for the Chinese Advanced I Course. An outline of the 6 essential units and 4 selective units follows. These units are primarily designed to be taught in order.
