Patient information Pregnancy termination; Medical termination at home You have received a tablet called Mifegyn®, which will initiate the medical abortion. You may experience some bleeding and slight stomach pain over the next few days. If you bring up the tablet within 2 hours, you must come back and get a new one. If you experience nausea, you can have a prescription for anti sickness tablets (antiemetics). You have been given medication to implement the treatment at home in the course of 2-3 days. Live as normally as possible; you can go to work If you require pain relief medication, you can take Ibuprofen/Paracetamol/Naproxen Breastfeeding is not advised for the first week after taking Mifegyn® Use sanitary pads, not tampons, for the bleeding. You have been given the following medications: For insertion in the vagina: Cytotec® 200mcg, 4 tablets Extra: For dissolving under the tongue: Cytotec® 200mcg, 2 tablets (if you haven't aborted after 4-6 hours) By mouth: Afipran 10mg, 3 tablets (for nausea) Paracetamol 500mg, 6 tablets (for pain) Diclofenac 50 mg, 4 tablets (for pain) Two or three days later (the day of the abortion/termination) …………………………………………………… You must have an adult with you (friend, partner, family member) Start by emptying your bladder Insert the 4 Cytotec® tablets into your vagina at 08:00. Swallow two Paracet® tablets and two Diclofenac® tablets for pain, and one tablet of Afipran® for nausea at 08:00. If required, you can take 2 Paracet® tablets and 1 Diclofenac® tablet after 3-4 hours, and the same dose again after a further 3-4 hours if needed. Take 1 tablet of Afipran at the same time if you are queasy/nauseous. You can eat and drink as you like, and maintain normal activity as far as is possible. It normally takes 4-6 hours from inserting the Cytotec® into your vagina until you abort. You can experience strong period cramps, especially when the womb is working to expel its contents. It is normal to bleed more heavily than a period during a termination/abortion. A hot water bottle on your stomach can also help with the pain. A nurse from the KK Ward 4AC will ring you between 11:00 and 13:00 the day you take Cytotec®, to hear how you are doing. If you haven't aborted 4-6 hours after taking Cytotec®, take the extra dose of Cytotec® (place it under your tongue until it dissolves) After the termination/abortion you should be aware of the following: A light, brown or reddish discharge is normal for the first 2-4 weeks. Use sanitary pads, not tampons. Contact the Women's Clinic if you bleed heavily/clots/lumps, or of you do not experience bleeding. You must also contact us if you have severe pain that is not helped by paracetamol, or if you have a temperature over 38C. You periods will return 4-6 weeks after the termination. The first period is often heavier and lasts longer than normal. Intercourse, bathing, and tampon use should be avoided for the first two weeks, or as long as the bleeding lasts. Pain similar to period pain is normal. If you are starting on the contraceptive pill, you can start taking it the day after the termination. You will normally be given a sick note for 3 days, including the day of the termination/abortion. Still pregnant? A pregnancy test can normally be positive up to 3-4 weeks after a termination. Very rarely the pregnancy is not interrupted and continues to develop. To be on the safe side, you must therefore take a blood test 4 weeks after the termination; use the blood test form given to you at the outpatient’s clinic. You will receive an sms/text reminder. You will be contacted if the result is abnormal.
