EWOK MATERIALS: 1 chenille stem at full length, approx. 12” 3 chenille half stems, approx. 6” each 1 piece beige or brown felt about 1½”x1½” square Prepared craft stick pieces (see directions below) Markers for facial details (black or brown) Glue PREPARE AHEAD: Prepare “Jumbo” craft sticks by cutting the rounded ends off at approximately 2” from each end. The remaining piece (middle) may be cut in two to make bases for two Ewok characters to stand more reliably. (NOTE: I used an old wire cutter to score then break craft sticks, but my husband’s use of a saw was much more efficient. I then dragged pieces across gritty sandpaper to clear away splintered/rough edges.) STEPS: 1) Choose colors: the full length chenille stem will be the main body of the Ewok, the half lengths will be for ears, front-paws and foot-paws (feet). 2) Fold each of the short stems in half. For ears and feet you will curl the stem inward toward the fold, leaving about ¾” to pinch and anchor behind the body when you wrap the full stem from neck to feet. The third piece will be the arms/front-paws. NOTE: If you put a little glue on the back of the head it will hold the ears close to the stick and keep them from dropping backward. 3) Take the long (12”) chenille stem and begin wrapping the craft stick so that it just captures the bottom of the ears. As you go, anchor the “arms” stem and finally the bit where the feet attach. Twist arm piece to make little round paws. Turn the Ewok over and bend the feet up toward the front and flatten to make it stand up. (OPTIONAL: glue a piece of the middle scrap wood to the bottom to make standing easier.) 4) Draw the Ewok’s face on the still visible rounded end of the stick with a marker. Outline edge of head if desired. 5) Fold the 1½”x1½” piece of felt on the diagonal and snip a little triangle in the center. Carefully put this over the Ewok’s head and bend the arms and front-paws to hold it down (or you can put a touch of glue behind the front and back points). Clifton Park - Halfmoon Public Library L.
