Grades 3rd – 6th The Texas Library Association sponsors
this reading list solely to encourage free voluntary reading. The titles
may be read in 3 ways: independently, with someone, or to someone.
Please write the DATE the book was read in the blank and turn into

Tonatiuh Duncan: Years before the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling BROWN v. BOARD OF
EDUCATION, Sylvia Mendez, an 8-year-old girl of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage, played an
instrumental role in MENDEZ v. WESTMINSTER, the desegregation case of 1946 in California.

20. _____ Zane and the Hurricane: A Story of Katrina by Rodman Philbrick: Zane is a charismatic
12-year-old boy visiting a relative in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hits. Unexpectedly
separated from his family, Zane and his dog face the terror of Katrina's wind, rain, and horrific
flooding.
This form is due in the library on Friday, 1/15/16, with at least 5 books read in order to
attend the voting celebration for your favorite TX Bluebonnet Book nominee. If you
continue reading and read at least 12 from the list, you will receive the TX Bluebonnet
Reading award in May 2016. The list is due back in the library again by Friday, 4/ 22/16.
