KHES Library 2015-16 Reading Program Dr. Kaye Bray KHES Genre/Bluebonnet Reading Challenge This year, KHES is holding a Genre/Bluebonnet Reading Challenge, designed to motivate KHES students to read and to expose students to different book types, or genres. What Are Genres? Genres are specific types of writing. Books may even have more than one genre! Some genres include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Adventure: Stories dominated by action, involving danger, risk, and excitement Fantasy: Stories that have monsters, magic, or characters with super powers Folklore: Fables, Myths, Tall Tales, Fairy Tales, and Legends Historical fiction: Fictional stories set around real events or people from history Mystery: Stories in which a detective, or other professional, solves a crime Non-fiction: Information that is true, about real things, people, events, and places (includes biographies and autobiographies) 7. Poetry: Writing concerned with the beauty of language written as poems 8. Realistic fiction: Stories that could be true, but aren’t; have no elements of fantasy 9. Sci-fi: Stories that have aliens, robots, futuristic technology, space ships, etc. 10. Sports: Stories about characters involved in different sports What Are Bluebonnet Books? Each year, 20 books are selected by the Texas Library Association (TLA) aimed at students in grades 3-6. Students in these grades are encouraged to read all 20 books, and those who read a minimum of five books (and/or have the books read to them) are eligible to vote in the statewide election (at the end of January) for their favorite. The book with the most votes receives the prestigious Texas Bluebonnet Award! The program started in 1981, which means there are 35 past Bluebonnet winners!! A list of current Bluebonnet nominees is attached. There is also a link to this list on the KHE library website. How It Works? Students will be given their first (bronze) Reading Record sheet in October. Each book read should be recorded on the READING LOG under the correct reading choice. Remember a book may be entered only once on the logs, but the books may be obtained from anywhere. And, they may include e-books. There are three sheets total (bronze, silver, & gold) and students will have the school year to complete them. Each time a student turns in a sheet, he/she will be given the next reading log, a special bookmark and a special reading tag. When Is My Log Due? All Reading Record sheets must be turned in no later than Friday May 6th. NOTE: Students who participate must read their books between Oct. 1st and April 30th. The only exception to this is the list of current Bluebonnet nominees, which may have been read at any time. When Will Awards Be Distributed? A Reading Certificate will be given out at the end of the year for students who complete and turn in at least one sheet. Also, there will be a pizza/refreshments party for those students who turn in all three sheets!
