Myanmar’s transition to democracy has been a significant development for the
Indo–Myanmar bilateral relations. As Myanmar ushers in significant political and
economic reforms and opens up to foreign investment, it showcases great
potential for being an economic conduit between the SAARC nations and the
ASEAN.
In this background, Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) organized “India
INVESTRADE 2014” Yangon, Myanmar. The theme of the conference was
“Building synergies for Trade & Investment”. Ministry of Commerce and
Industry, Government of India supported this initiative of ICC. The Embassy
of India in Yangon also has taken an instrumental role in making this initiative a
success. Apart from this, the most prominent Industry body of Myanmar, the
UMFCCI and other direct stakeholders etc. also took active part in this
programme.
India and Myanmar enjoy cordial relations; and the geographical proximity has
facilitated the long-standing trade relations across the land and sea routes.
Myanmar has been a major trading partner of India and India-Myanmar Trade
has immense potential. The strategic importance of Myanmar is immense for
2
India due to the fact that Myanmar is the Gateway or the only land-bridge to the
ASEAN markets and the primary aim of the ‘Look East’ Policy is to build stronger
bridges of trade & economic co-operation between India and the countries in
South & South-East Asia. The India-ASEAN FTA in goods has been able to
enhance trade volume in the region considerably, with a 30% growth in IndiaASEAN trade, which crossed US $ 50 billion mark in 2010-11. With such a pace
of increase, it is expected to touch the trade target of US $125 billion by 2015.
And in this process of India’s enhanced economic engagement with her Asian
neighbours, Myanmar can surely play a crucial role.
In-order to strengthen the relation between India and Myanmar, Indian Chamber
of Commerce along with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of
India has organized India Investrade on 23 & 24 July 2014 at Sedona Hotel,
Yangon, Myanmar. The purpose of the event was to promote and facilitate trade
and business engagement between India and Myanmar. The goals of the
programme could be placed in the broader framework of Government of India’s
existing foreign policy of intensifying regional co-operation and economic
integration with South and South East Asian countries.

for economic development. He mentioned that Myanmar Government is taking the
initiative to form a Committee with Investors to facilitate the process.

fraternity to look beyond Yangon and focus regions like Central Myanmar. He
particularly mentioned about the 3 special economic zones and 18 industrial zones
as destinations of investments, developed and promoted by the Government of
Myanmar. He further pointed out that apart from agricultural industries, which is the

base of the economy, Myanmar needs Indian support & cooperation in the sectors such
as Healthcare & IT services, up-gradation of IT skills, training in English language,
professional courses & higher education along with power & cement industries
keeping in mind the huge construction requirements of the country.
Mr Win Aung, President, UMFCCI opened his Inaugural address by saying that the
very name “India Investrade 2014” signifies the focus of Investment as against trade to
enhance the process of democratization of the country. He further mentioned that as
India ranks 11th in the list of investors in Myanmar, there is huge scope of investment.
He especially recommended the Thilawa SEZ as the investment destination to the
Indian business fraternity which would become operational from mid 2015 and is
closest to Yangon, just 17 kms from downtown Yangon. He urged the large corporate
and business Conglomerates apart from SMEs to set up their units at Myanmar. Mr
Aung highlighted the special tax exemption incentive for manufacturing units of
Myanmar for export to the European market and mentioned that Indian
companies should join hands with their Myanmar counterparts.
Mr Ravi Capoor, Joint Secretary, Deptt. of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce &
Industry, Government of India stated that the Myanmar Government is encouraging
joint ventures and incentivizing by exemption from income tax in certain sectors.
He particularly mentioned about the boom in transport sector and pointed out that there
is huge opportunity in the public transport sector. He was also keen to uphold the
fact that setting up a manufacturing unit in Myanmar would allow that company to
enter the markets of China & Japan owing to Myanmar’s FTA with these
countries. Mr Capoor declared that from 1st of October 2014 direct shipping service
would be starting from India to Myanmar and thus would strengthen the bilateral
relation between both the countries.
