EVENT REPORT India INVESTRADE 2014 A Conference cum Exposition & Buyer Seller Meet on Multiple Sectors 23rd – 24th July, 2014; Sedona Hotel, Yangon, Myanmar Organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce In Association with Ministry of Commerce & Industry Government of India With Support from Embassy of India, Yangon, Myanmar India INVESTRADE 2014 A Conference cum Exposition & Buyer Seller Meet on Multiple Sectors 23rd – 24th July, 2014; Sedona Hotel, Yangon, Myanmar Indian Chamber of Commerce has organized a two-day programme “India INVESTRADE 2014” at Sedona Hotel, Yangon on 23rd & 24th July, 2014. The programme dealt with multiple sectors relevant for the Myanmar market. The sectors included electrical & electrical machineries, agriculture & tea, logistics, chemicals & paints, construction, handloom & textile, handicrafts, leather, healthcare, IT & Banks, education, steel & engineering. The programme consisted of conference, an exhibition and buyer-seller meets. Myanmar’s transition to democracy has been a significant development for the Indo–Myanmar bilateral relations. As Myanmar ushers in significant political and economic reforms and opens up to foreign investment, it showcases great potential for being an economic conduit between the SAARC nations and the ASEAN. In this background, Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) organized “India INVESTRADE 2014” Yangon, Myanmar. The theme of the conference was “Building synergies for Trade & Investment”. Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India supported this initiative of ICC. The Embassy of India in Yangon also has taken an instrumental role in making this initiative a success. Apart from this, the most prominent Industry body of Myanmar, the UMFCCI and other direct stakeholders etc. also took active part in this programme. India and Myanmar enjoy cordial relations; and the geographical proximity has facilitated the long-standing trade relations across the land and sea routes. Myanmar has been a major trading partner of India and India-Myanmar Trade has immense potential. The strategic importance of Myanmar is immense for 2 India due to the fact that Myanmar is the Gateway or the only land-bridge to the ASEAN markets and the primary aim of the ‘Look East’ Policy is to build stronger bridges of trade & economic co-operation between India and the countries in South & South-East Asia. The India-ASEAN FTA in goods has been able to enhance trade volume in the region considerably, with a 30% growth in IndiaASEAN trade, which crossed US $ 50 billion mark in 2010-11. With such a pace of increase, it is expected to touch the trade target of US $125 billion by 2015. And in this process of India’s enhanced economic engagement with her Asian neighbours, Myanmar can surely play a crucial role. In-order to strengthen the relation between India and Myanmar, Indian Chamber of Commerce along with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India has organized India Investrade on 23 & 24 July 2014 at Sedona Hotel, Yangon, Myanmar. The purpose of the event was to promote and facilitate trade and business engagement between India and Myanmar. The goals of the programme could be placed in the broader framework of Government of India’s existing foreign policy of intensifying regional co-operation and economic integration with South and South East Asian countries. EVENT FOCUS: An Exposition to showcase Indian companies / products in Myanmar. Large, medium and small industries from key sectors participated in the Exposition. Industry representatives from Myanmar companies also interacted with Indian companies for possible business tie-ups. To bring important stakeholders of both the countries under one common umbrella in the form of ‘Buyer-Seller Meet’ for facilitating two-way trade. 3 A Conference to discuss various key issues related to India-Myanmar trade & economic cooperation wherein important dignitaries from Govt. & Industry of both the countries came together to share their ideas and views. He mentioned that Myanmar Government is taking the initiative to form a Committee with Investors to facilitate the process. Mr. Gautam Mukhopadhaya, Ambassador of India at Yangon urged Indian business fraternity to look beyond Yangon and focus regions like Central Myanmar. He particularly mentioned about the 3 special economic zones and 18 industrial zones as destinations of investments, developed and promoted by the Government of Myanmar. He further pointed out that apart from agricultural industries, which is the 5 base of the economy, Myanmar needs Indian support & cooperation in the sectors such as Healthcare & IT services, up-gradation of IT skills, training in English language, professional courses & higher education along with power & cement industries keeping in mind the huge construction requirements of the country. Mr Win Aung, President, UMFCCI opened his Inaugural address by saying that the very name “India Investrade 2014” signifies the focus of Investment as against trade to enhance the process of democratization of the country. He further mentioned that as India ranks 11th in the list of investors in Myanmar, there is huge scope of investment. He especially recommended the Thilawa SEZ as the investment destination to the Indian business fraternity which would become operational from mid 2015 and is closest to Yangon, just 17 kms from downtown Yangon. He urged the large corporate and business Conglomerates apart from SMEs to set up their units at Myanmar. Mr Aung highlighted the special tax exemption incentive for manufacturing units of Myanmar for export to the European market and mentioned that Indian companies should join hands with their Myanmar counterparts. Mr Ravi Capoor, Joint Secretary, Deptt. of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India stated that the Myanmar Government is encouraging joint ventures and incentivizing by exemption from income tax in certain sectors. He particularly mentioned about the boom in transport sector and pointed out that there is huge opportunity in the public transport sector. He was also keen to uphold the fact that setting up a manufacturing unit in Myanmar would allow that company to enter the markets of China & Japan owing to Myanmar’s FTA with these countries. Mr Capoor declared that from 1st of October 2014 direct shipping service would be starting from India to Myanmar and thus would strengthen the bilateral relation between both the countries. 6 HIGHLIGHT OF THE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FOCUSED SECTORS India’s trade with Myanmar got doubled in the last seven years. In 2013-14 total trade has crossed US$ 2 billion with exports at US$ 787.01 million and imports at US$ 1.395 billion. Myanmar is a potential investment destination for electrical machineries and spare parts as many new industries are rapidly budding in this country. Since the govt. of Myanmar is looking forward to an immense technological up gradation, presently engineering products are the utmost required items in Myanmar. Not only the industrial products and chemicals but it has always possessed a very promising market for tea. Building bridges between India and Myanmar based on these sectors would benefit the economy of both the countries positively. EXISTING INDIA-MYANMAR BILATERAL TRADE RELATIONSHIP India is the 4th largest trading partner among ASEAN and neighboring countries of Myanmar and ranks 11th in terms of investment in Myanmar. Private entrepreneurs from 7 both countries have shown increasing interest in conducting bilateral trade and commerce and Potential areas are Pharmaceuticals, agricultural machinery, agrochemicals, electrical goods, iron and steel, pulses and beans, investment in plantations, ICT and IT-related products and services. India and Myanmar share a very strong bilateral trade relation facilitating the economy of both the countries.
