PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SCHOOL ITE STUDENT DEVELOPMENT Coedcae School Introduction Coedcae School has committed to the implementation of the Professional Learning School model and accepted the conditions attached to becoming a PLS for ITE Student Development. We are developing our current programme to include further elements of excellent practice to ensure that the Case Study provides appropriate guidance for other schools in the region for developing or improving their own programmes with relation to this aspect of school development. Outline information: Lead senior member of staff: Mrs C. Scotti: Assistant Headteacher Brief description and outline plan including expected impact: ITE Student Development Coedcae School aims to develop closer links with the Initial Teacher Education programme at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in order to offer PGCE students the highest quality training provision which combines theoretical and practical elements of their learning. Our project focuses specifically on developing students’ skills to provide high quality formative and summative assessment feedback to pupils. This aspect of teaching and learning is key to raising pupil standards and the need for further development in this area has been identified as a national priority. Aims: 1. Our PGCE students – to allow them to develop a range of assessment and feedback strategies and understand the crucial role of these in raising pupil standards. 2. Our pupils – to provide them with an improved understanding of both their learning and how to develop further to maximize their progress. To enable them to engage in meaningful dialogue about their learning with their teacher. 3. Our teachers – to give them access to the latest research on assessment and the opportunity to engage in reflective practice which will benefit their own teaching. Structure: The project allows students to make continuous links between the theoretical and practical aspects of their training in order to gain a rounded pedagogical understanding. This will be achieved through close and regular collaboration between students, school mentors and the university link tutor. Twilight sessions will be attended by PGCE students, mentors and senior mentors from across schools, as well as by the university link tutor. This model will offer the ITE experience and on-going CPD for school staff as a continuum of learning and will support consistency in the training experience of PGCE students. Outcomes: Students will have a sound understanding of the role of assessment, both within a school context and on a national level, and will be able to apply a variety of assessment strategies effectively and appropriately. Their progress will be evaluated through a range of methods including student voice, written and video evidence. For further information, please refer to our Powerpoint Presentation Key elements that the school considers can be shared with other schools: 1. Structures for partnership working between school and UWTSD to provide an effective and consistent ITE experience. 2. Structures for supporting, tracking and evaluating PGCE students’ progress in a target area. 3. Sharing strategies for developing high quality and consistent formative feedback. 4. Sharing best practice on developing a learning dialogue between pupil and teacher. 5. Effective tracking of pupil progress at KS3 and KS4 to make summative judgements. 6. Opportunities for staff to access the latest research on, and share best practice in, assessment and feedback.
