Introduce literary terms for prose fiction by reading the terms out loud as a whole group. Give
examples and in-depth clarification. Have students do the matching activity and then go over it.

Show the literary elements PowerPoint and have learners take notes.

Read the short story “After Twenty Years” by O. Henry out loud, letting various learners read.
Stop periodically to discuss what is going on.

As a whole group, with the teacher leading, look for the following in the story: setting, conflict,
characters, mood, plot, and theme.

Give the students “After Twenty Years” analysis questions and tell them they can work with a
partner or individually. Turn in and check.

Introduce “What is a constructed response?” Read out loud together.

Read the short story “The Bet” by Anton Chekhov out loud and highlight: setting, conflict,
characters, mood, plot, and theme.

Finish reading “The Bet” and analysis.

Give the students “The Bet Analysis Questions” and tell them to complete just the multiple choice.

Project the document “Two constructed responses for ‘The Bet’”. Read together and
compare/contrast the two responses.
