Name: _________________________________________ Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Study Guide 1. What is needed for photosynthesis to occur? Where does it come from? Radiant (light) energy, carbon dioxide and water are needed for photosynthesis to occur. The radiant energy comes from the sun or another light source such as a heat lamp. The carbon dioxide is released as a product from cellular respiration. Water comes from precipitation and enters the plant through the roots. 2. What is needed for cellular respiration to occur? Where does it come from? For cellular respiration to occur there must be oxygen and glucose present. These are both products of photosynthesis which allow cellular respiration to happen. 3. What are the products of photosynthesis? How do you know? The products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen. I know this because they are the products of a chemical reaction happening between carbon dioxide, water and radiant energy. 4. What are the products of cellular respiration? How do you know? The products of carbon dioxide are carbon dioxide, water and ATP energy. These are the products because during the process the oxygen and the glucose break down within the mitochondria to create these products through a chemical reaction. 5. What happens to the energy flow in photosynthesis? How do you know? The energy in photosynthesis begin s at the light source. This energy this causes a chemical reaction to occur with the light energy, carbon dioxide and water are all present. The energy is then changed into glucose (sugar) and is the main form of food for the plant and this energy is also transfers to primary consumers who eat the plant, secondary and tertiary consumers who eat the secondary consumers. The energy is then cycled back by these organisms going through cellular respiration and providing the carbon dioxide needed to complete photosynthesis again. 6. What happens to the energy flow in cellular respiration? How do you know? During cellular respiration the energy flow begins with the consumption or using of glucose created from photosynthesis. This glucose is then transported to the mitochondria with the cells to be converted or changed into ATP energy. 7. Where does photosynthesis take place? Be specific. Photosynthesis happens in the chloroplasts of the plant cells in the presence of chlorophyll. 8. Where does cellular respiration take place? Be specific. Cellular Respiration occurs in both plant and animal cells’ mitochondria. 9. What is used as food and how? Where does it come from? Glucose is used by both plants and animals for food. Plants get glucose by going through photosynthesis and using carbon dioxide and water with light energy to create glucose and oxygen. Animals get their glucose by consuming plants (primary consumers) or organisms who have consumed plants (secondary consumers) 10. Do autotrophs do both photosynthesis and cellular respiration? How do you know? Autotrophs (plants) do go through both cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Because they go through photosynthesis to create the glucose and then go through cellular respiration to convert the glucose into ATP energy. Name: _________________________________________ 11. What is fermentation? Why does it happen? Fermentation is cellular respiration without the presence of oxygen. It can happen in the muscles and creates lactic acid as a product. It can also happen in yeast and bacteria and create carbon dioxide and alcohol as products.
