To Kill a Mockingbird: Purposes for Reading
11/15: Chapters 1-3 (pp.3-32 or pp. 3-42)
Purpose: Record one example of figurative language, name the type, and analyze its purpose and/or effect on
the text. Don’t forget to use in-text citation and IRE style!
11/19: Chapters 4-7 (pp. 32-63 or pp. 43-84)
Purpose: Record and EXPLAIN one passage where you see empathy or where empathy could help.
Don’t forget to use in-text citation and IRE style!
11/27: Chapters 8-10 (pp. 63-99 or pp. 85-131)
Purpose: Record and EXPLAIN one quote that explains why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.

11/29: Chapter 11 (pp. 99-112)
Purpose: Record and EXPLAIN Atticus’ definition of true courage. Don’t forget to use in-text citation
and IRE style!
Chapters 12-13 (pp. 113-134)
Will be summarized in class.
12/3: Chapters 14-16 (pp.134-166 or pp. 180-221)
We will read excerpts in class. Mob Scene: pp. 151-154 and pp. 157-8.
Purpose: Record a few pieces of powerful diction and explain how they create a specific tone Don’t
forget to use in-text citation and IRE style!
OR
Record one example of figurative language, name the type, and analyze its purpose and/or effect on
the text. Don’t forget to use in-text citation and IRE style!
12/5: Chapters 17-19 IN CLASS reading and acting.
Purpose: Record at least THREE passages showing
o How do characters hold onto their dignity?
o How do characters lose / have their dignity taken away?
Then choose ONE passage to turn into an IRE sandwich with in-text citation.
12/7: Chapters 20-27 (pp. 199-254 or pp. 267-340)
Will summarize portions of text and read excerpts in class.
Purpose: To Be Announced
