COMENIUS PROJECT “YOUNG EXPLORERS OF THE SEA” Meeting in Greece, January 2015 Our Diary Our experience in Greece began on January 8th and ended on the 14th of the same month. Firstly we flew from Catania to Rome. We had a stop there and from the capital we went to Athens by another plane. Arrived at Athens airport, we took a private bus and after four hours and a half bus ride we finally arrived in Volos. The first day, after our arrival there, we went to the houses of the families who hosted us and we spent the whole evening together. The next day the program started with a tour organized by the Greek school to visit the city of Volos. We visited an art museum called “Neolithic Athanassakeion Archaeological Museum of Volos”, then we went to the house-museum “Kitsos Makris Folk Art Centre” of a famous artist who painted picture and interesting details. We also visited a large brick factory “Rooftile and Brickworks Museum N. & S. Tsalapatas”, learning some techniques thanks to the explanation of a guide. After that, we enjoyed a nice walk along the seafront of Volos where we could take some nice pictures and meet the rest of the group “Comenius”. After we met, we went to a very nice restaurant in the center of Volos for eating together. The afternoon was spent entirely for shopping. In the evening we had dinner with the host families and we had fun together. During the second day, we visited “Meteora” with a guided tour and a specific visit of the “Great Meteoron monastery” and “Varlaam monastery”. We had lunch at “Katogi restaurant” in the city of Trikala, which is supposed to be the birth town of Asclepius, the god of medicine according to Greek mithology. On the third day, however, we visited the “Mount Pelion”, the living place of Centaurs, according to the ancient Greek Mythology. Afterwards there was a visit to the traditional villages of “Makrinitsa”, “Portaria” and “Pelion Ski Center” called “Agriolefkes”. Before lunch, we visited the “Folk Art and History of Pelionmuseum” in Makrinitsa. Then we had lunch, together with teachers, at “Portaria Hotel”. We enjoyed so much a folk orchestra live and we danced the traditional Greek dance “Syrtaki”. From the balcony we also enjoyed an amazing sunset over the sea. In the evening we came back to Volos. We went to a pub in Agria, a city near Volos and we had really fun. We danced, sang, joked and shared good times together with all the other guys from the different countries. The fourth day was the day of the presentations. It started with the “Welcome Show” organized by the Greek students. We had our performances at the "Porphyrogeni" an institution that their school cooperates intimately with. Each group had to present their work done. All the works were satisfactory and interesting. We presented a Powerpoint based on a work of art inspired by the sea: “The birth of Venus” and another Powerpoint that illustrated the various marine species of our Mediterranean sea and finally we showed the audience a glass plate decorated with polymer clay and hand made by our school friend. Our presentations ended with a theatrical and so original performance prepared by the Greek guys. After that we went to their school and they showed us their classrooms. Then, we had lunch at school and we danced all the time in the “Great Hall”. In the afternoon we returned to Volos. We had a little time for doing some shopping and for going for a walk. The night of the same day was great because all the students went to a restaurant, we had dinner there and after that we went to a club for dancing and spending our evening as the other days. The fifth day was the day of some departures. Only the Italians, the Romanians, the Greeks and the Polish guys walked around the center of Volos and we visited also the “Saint Nickolas cathedral”. Then we visited the “Volos Natural History Museum” and had lunch at “Tsipouradiko place” in Palia Volou. We ate fish served in different ways. That day was the last day in Volos with our Greek friends and that was the reason why we decided to stay together for the last time. We enjoyed a lot our night and we said also goodbye to our hosting families. We thanked them for their hospitality and for the good time spent together. The sixth and last day we took the bus very early for going to Athens. Only the Romanians and the Italians had the opportunity to visit this beautiful city. There we spent our time going for a walk around its center and visiting the most important attractions. For example, we visited the “Akropolis” where we saw the beauty of the ancient temples and also the “Akropolis Modern Museum”. After that we went for a walk around the “Plaka” and the “Monastiraky” that are the two major neighborhoods of the city. We had lunch in a typical greek restaurant, eating the traditional food, and finally we bought the last presents to give our family and friends. At the end, we took the bus again and we went to the airport. That was our real goodbye to Greece. We flew from Athens to Rome and from Rome to Catania. Our magic experience in Greece ended in this way but we will never forget it. Thanks to all of them! We enjoyed it very much!
